16/8 vs. 12/12

I noticed the plants I have under 16+ hours are doing a bit better than the plants in my bedroom that are on about 12 hrs, and this is the same results I get every year.

AJ,

Yeah, but looking at the figures that count the most, cost per lumen, it would take me about 6.5 years (using the 105-watt bulbs 12 hours a day for three month) to recoup the difference in the cost between them and the T5.

Of course, this doesn't take into account the efficacy of the lighting.

Mike

what the heck is another 50 a month...it is only for 3 months...

I don't need/want any more lights

I'm not thinking in terms of cost, in in terms of life span of the globe...

I will start with 12/12 then when the plant starts fruiting I will be going 16/8...

Mike, I only grow to transplant and only use cheap fluorescents but I do get 100's of pods to form by plant out time. That is from a large number of plants though.

Dale,

Was that in the fruiting stage also or just growing them large enough to transplant? I could see plants needing more hours of light to set and ripen pods, again, much like nature.

Mike

Out of how many plants though? I had just under 500. I am not really looking for them to bud because it's a pain in the ass to pull them all off when I transplant them out.

Dale

Dale,

About 45! What the heck were you doing with 500 plants - did you transplant all of them to your garden or sell them?

I'm going to have a tad over 1,000 this year but that's spread out among 20 different types of plants, including two flowers!

Mike

Mike, I had just under 300 plants in the garden (100+ varieties) and 50 or so in my landscape (15 varieties), the rest I just give away. This year will be a whole different story due to the pepper maggot problem I've had the last couple of years. I will plant mostly wild varieties but the few others that i will plant have to completely isolate with some tulle bags.

Dale

Dale,

I would nearly kill to be able to have 300 plants in the garden! Well, I can, maybe, if a bunch of them are carrots, beans, peas and onions! I have about 1200 sq. ft. of room but some of that area (400 sq. ft) is deader than a doornail. I'm hoping to reclaim at least half that this year and the other half next year.

Dale,

Looked at them - one nice garden area. I wish I had that much space in the back yard but I like the fact you don't seem to waste much room. Your neighbors must be either very jealous or very thankful!

Mike

I'm growing baby water melons which don't take up to much room and the fruit at full size is only about 8 inches round
