2011 Grow List and Log

Started my 2011 grow season early this year. This is my third year. Super-hots have been very difficult for me. This year I am attacking them on all cylinders. I live in coastal Southern California. I have a greenhouse filled with seedlings started in early December 2010 in starting soil as well as two hydroponic buckets. Most of my starts have been of Bhuts/Trinidads/and habaneros. Pictures to follow.

Thank you. This "hobby" has kinda gotten out of control. It keeps me out of trouble, however, and calms my mind. I'm glad I found this group of like-minded pepper fanatics. :)

Rough winds right now in Southern California. Moved my seedlings indoors. Not sure if greenhouse will survive. I hope so. Seedlings are thriving in there.

Greenhouse survived with only a few minor scars that I was able to repair. Seedlings are doing fine eventhough it is cold out there. I'm pleased. I'll post updated pics soon.

Plants are doing well. Am changing to bottom watering because AJ thinks it's a good idea. And what AJ says, Ben does. Here are updated pics.

Am very happy so far. I hope my Bhuts stay nice and strong for me this year.

Cheers!

February 22, 2011 update.

I've been neglecting my log. I took pictures on 2/22/11 but forgot to post. Here they are.

I am trying a bulk planting of tomatoes which I will transfer to individual pots once they are big enough.

My soil grown buts are coming along nicely.

My non-superhots are also doing well.

My hydroponic deep water culture plants are great.

The plants are thriving in the greenhouse. California has a large storm system driving through. I'll take updated photos once it passes.

Some of those look on the tall leggy side to me. Is your greenhouse shaded? Seems like with SoCal sun they would be a little fatter.

I ask this because I'm transferring more and more to greenhouse light and its not very consistent for me right now.

Very nice ben. I have never done hydroponics. Was gonna start this year but decided to put off until next. Looks like your doing very well. Good luck the rest of the season.

That too had me nervous at first. But those particular plants are from a Mexican pequin variety I received from Mexico that is tall/thin and a fast grower. It definately is outpacing all other plants planted at the same time. And although they are thin, they are strong and do not need support whereas a few of my habs are thick but needed to be supported.

My greenhouse is partially shaded when the sun passes the second story house. That said, the plants still receive a good 8 hours of strong sun and the greenhouse protects the seedlings from the cold and wind.

All that being said, I am a third year grower still climbing the learning curve. I am absorbing as much as I can from all the veterans making this my most successful year so far. In my first two years I started 75 Bhut seed. Only one survived to maturity.

Thank you. I was hesitant starting hydroponics this year because I have yet to have a successful soil grow. However, Deep Water Culture (DWC)is definitely the simplest form of hydroponics that only requires you follow a few simple guidelines. I am now a convert. Most of my quality peppers will now be grown hydroponically. I am now researching ebb and flow hydroponics which is a little more complex and expensive but it would cut down on the weekly maintenance required in a DWC setup.

I will soon post pics of my grown DWC Bhut plants that have many flowers blooming.

Thanks, Ben! Very interesting the wild Mexican pequins. You are indeed hitting on all cylinders including the hydro.

Appreciate the greenhouse insights, as I'm first year trying to sort it out in one. If I can get 8 hours of real sun in the gh, I'm hoping that's as good as indoor lights.
