2019 - The Farm

Well, it's finally time to start. Again. :)

Finished taking inventory of seeds today, and started the 2019 grow list. Since the 24x96' isolation high tunnel is done, I'll be growing a crazy long list this year, as we'll be growing for 2020 seed inventory. With the soil mix equipment, it should be a lot less work on my back this winter! (Even more so if I get the indoor grow areas plumbed and set up on drip irrigation, still not sure I got the budget for that yet tho)

Some of the seeds I'll be pulling from are damn near 10 years old now, so I expect many of these to eventually get crossed off with 0 germination. Everything I have ever saved or traded is getting planted, though. There's 203 on the list right now, many duplicates though where seeds were sourced from more than one person/vendor.

The grow room at home is getting a makeover, going to be "going vertical" to get some space back. More on that in a few days...

This list is not complete yet, I will be adding more after I hear back from a few folks I PM'd.

Most of the lettuce is for taste and local adaptability trials, small little plots. We'll be succession planting out most crops, small qty for market, so "big list, not so big qty."

Some of the stock (various herbs, seedless watermelons) is non-organic seed stock and will either be grown either in the north transitional field or in pots.

570 fruit trees are also coming sometime early spring, those will go in to the dirt as soon as it can be worked after freeze. We'll plant those and forget about them for a few years.. just mow around them. All the big work starts in a few years with those.  Shouldn't need to irrigate them unless we get a big dry spell, and/or until they start producing.

Iron toxicity is nasty stuff, worse than any nute burn you could do with fertilizers. It interrupts cells from being created, it damages plant DNA, it completely locks out phosphorous, etc.. etc.. horrible stuff.

Here's some of the early plants I took out last year that got hit, in various stages of healing (set them back months)

x3T2Usd.jpg

Compared to same seeding date, later transplant - this plant came out to the farm a couple weeks after the other but were started the same day. Same soil mix, etc. Only difference is one was brought to the farm at the very beginning (and got hit with the rust accumulated in the well), and the other came out a couple weeks later, after the rust had been flushed out. (Between first and second, there was drywall work, toilet plumbing, shower install, sink installs, etc, which we ran quite a lot of water through that purged the iron oxide)

HMibS2z.jpg

Those were seeded same day, pictures taken same day, only difference is when they got brought out to the farm.

Pretty stark contrast.

Glad I kept detailed notes and took so many photos last year, was very helpful when I finally had the lightbulb moment this year on what the hell is going wrong...

March 16 last year, brought the first plants to the farm after construction was done;

cW0S0SI.jpg

February 24th this year; and somehow I managed to miss taking any pictures of table #1, which has 107 MOA scotch bonnets, and 64 Freeport orange scotch bonnets on it.

Freeport orange on table 1 visible on the back of this pic; front is Big Sun Habanero

DlQ3dET.jpg

Top right are some of the MOA's on table one; the table in front is all Carribean Red Habanero (from walchit). You can see the cheaper 4" black pots on the right, those are going to the charity plant sale in May.

No Pubescens then....Well, it ain't like I ddn't try...

Interesting you bring up iron toxicity, my dad's family is rooted in the iron range of the arrowhead part of MN. When I go up there I marvel at the birch stands thriving on the rust hills left from the open pit mines there. Apparently if you want healthy robust birch trees, feed 'em lots of iron!

Not so much with the peppers, eh?

No evidently they don't like that much iron! :)

This is what's left to transplant out of the first batch, based on last full inventory I did 2/17 (so there may be more, I didn't take a count this sunday)

The year-to-year comparison is very interesting.

Looks like you still have enough starts to
make a bit of work for yourself!

Yes, unlike last year where I was starting to panic about this point in time, I've easily got enough c.chinense and c. pubescense to fill the 3200 spots in the farm loft.

Annuums are 100% depending on the high tunnel - I don't have room for them to grow indoors. Target goal is 5,200 pepper plants this year. Some for resale, some for planting, some for seed stock in isolation.

We're building 70x 30"x96" tables for the isolation high tunnel. Since I sort of need walkways, we'll only have 1400 sq foot usable space for the isolation grow.

And hopefully none of the people who work for you this year will be dicks, that way you don't have to fire anyone.

Well, doing our best not to hire anyone this year, trying to keep expenses as near zero as I can. I mean, granted, just spent 50k on a tractor and various horticulture attachments.. but that's money I don't have to spend on labor. :)

Are you sure you haven't confused 'Panca' with 'Pacay'? I know the Aji Pacay is a time sucking monster....

Hey! I saw Rocotos on that list!

My work here is done!

Nope, grew the CCN aji panca last year. Great tasting mild chinense (after drying) but they take a couple months+ to ripen.
qvSnlJQ.jpg

Got to make sure they are totally ripe too or the flavor isnt the same.
7ZdLZsb.jpg

All I know is that with that grow list, I'll be checking his website at harvest time. If not for Trent, I wouldn't know the taste of a Scotch Bonnet.
