Also worth noting, there's a definitive trend where the "outer" cells germinate faster.

I'm not sure if that's the warming mats (which are unplugged, once the lights are on) or the lights doing that.

The center cells seem to be delayed several days from the outer cells. Even the onions did that!

Man, if you can lug the equipment around, I'm sure you could come back with all SORTS of interesting plants.

What's the plans for harvest & shipment back? FedEx? I can't imagine customs would be too nice on someone bringing back a bunch of foreign fruits.

Tray 25-28 Onions

Note the sluggish germination in the center. I think the warming mats + humidity domes are the issue as it was doing this before I even turned on the lights. My theory is the center stays dry as the warming mats and humidity domes tend to put water back on the outside edges when it drips off the dome. Once the trays get lights and are watered evenly the centers start to germinate.

I think next batch I will put on warmers *without* the humidity domes and bottom-water like all the rest, see if it evens out germination.

Andy sent me a metric shitload of those seeds - I still had a half pack left over after seeding 2x trays!

Since last year I came up so short on Habanero I planted two trays, I'm hoping that they will do well at market sales (as live plants)

Some sporadic early hooks, this tray should start hitting heavy in a day or three.

These may be red.. they may be yellow... I only grew yellow fatalli last year but had a couple of random reds show up in the field, which is what we saved seeds from. (More to satisfy my own curiosity about how they'll grow out)

Only one of these stubbornly slow seeds has sprouted so far

Moruga must be spanish for "Slow as Hell"

Tray 37-42

These uninteresting specimens are just sitting on the top shelf waiting to germinate (seeded yesterday)

I'm not using warming mats on these, just set them on the top shelf - it's plenty warm in that room now!

Will see if germination is more uniform without the "side drip" effect of the humidity domes keeping the outside wet and the inside dry....

Each tray got bottom watered with 40oz of water before begin set up top.

Tray 43 - 46

These strawberries were seeded differently. They'll have to go through stratification so they'll get set outside during the day, in a couple days, let them chill out.

Using a slatted 1020 tray (with drain slats) I laid a layer of coco down, leveled it, and spread the seeds, then gently pressed them in to the coco coir.

Then I filled a solid 1020 tray with 40 oz of water and floated the slatted 1020 tray down in to it, to soak up the water.

Should know in 2-3 weeks if it works.

Ok that's it for the night

Next photograph update will be in a couple weeks, it's damn time consuming. By then everything should be sprouted, true leaves emerged, etc. Two weeks after that, we'll be transplanting and moving these to the farm, and starting the next batch of seedlings (annuums)

Just a thought - could you not put a weight on top of the domes to make it cave in slightly so all the moisture on the dome "roof" will drip back into middle and side walls will still drip down the sides?

Yeah, that might help. I noticed it is mainly the front & back of the trays that stay wetter, which is where the warm air is going to meet the cooler ambient air. In these last six trays I added 40 oz of water to the tray, instead of 30 oz like I had been using, which should either solve the problem (keeping everything moist enough for germination to start)... or drown the seedlings

Should know in about a week.

Theres ways. So far Thailand, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru have all been fruitful, and those things have been in the garden since

Because the center of the mat and tray is always hotter than the edges. Sweet spot is 85F so I imagine that the centers are lagging due to being too warm.

Yeah, that could definitely be contributory. I noticed on the trays I just pitched sunday which were still on the warming mats, the center cells were damp only on the top 1/4" or so of soil; below that, they were bone frigging dry. Which is weird, as I put 30 oz of water in those trays to begin with and everything was very evenly saturated. The edge cells were sopping wet.

It might not be so much the dome causing issues w/ regards to drippage, but rather, the water in the tray evaporating up and out of the soil in the center hottest part. Those mats are pretty warm, and over the course of 15 days, apparently dry out all of the interior cells from the bottom-up.

I've historically been totally hands off, once something goes on the mats I don't touch it until I see hooks pop up, then it goes off the mats and under lights. I think from now on I'll have to add a bit of water about every 4-5 days and leave the humidity dome off while they soak it up. Clearly something isn't working the way I want it to if I'm getting dry substrate!

This is my main beef with mass sprouting in trays and soil real estate I worked so hard to create. In the past when doing mass germination, I've been screwed over, especially with cherished older seeds I didn't want to lose.

This year, I'm doing 90% of my germinating in to go ramekins with snap lids, placed on mats in trays. The little condiment cup things. Like the paper towel method except seed catalyst soaking first (especially on older ones), then placing a small square of moist paper towel in the bottom, placing seeds on top, snapping the lid closed and placing them into trays on top of mats, towel over top for insulation, mats controlled by thermostat set to 85 and probe placed in center of tray.

No risk of moisture loss, can see through the lids temp controlled etc.

I'll have my main trays/flats prepared with my starting medium and ready for transplanting the delicate sprouts into. No wasted real estate. Also, my seedlings will stay in the 3.5 inch sqaure, deep version pots 18/per tray until plant out in late March
