7Eye's (late) 2013 Glog

Hi everyone, im Isak and this is my grow for 2013. im starting late in the season or early depending on how u look at it as it never get below 5 degrees C here.
 
i dont have pics of when i started but ill post where i am currently. im growing Bishop's Crown and Trinidad Moruga Scorpions.
will post pics as soon as i figure out how

My Moruga Scorpions
Planted 14 July 2013 - so far 18 out of 24 have germinated although ive get another 6 growing in another area.

my question is. how long can i leave them in these cups, they dont need much watering as ive got water crystals mixed in the soil and they keep it moist enough for a few days.

You perforated the cups right?

My personal "golden rule" is I pot up if the leaves diameter gets wider than the pots diameter (give or take) - so I'd say within the next 2 weeks...

yeah the botoms are perforated and i get good drainage, i plan on using 6 litter bags or 9 liter buckets as their final space, is 6 liters enough?

what do you mean whit bags? root pouches (google it - you can do them diy and those are great)?
 
Most people here use fairly big containers (between 20 - 50 liters) ... while you will get away with both a 6 and 9 L ... the plant and pod-production are to a great extent a function of the root system ... and by the pot/container
 
Tell us more about your annual weather and seasons ... my feeling is you get a long growing season (just like me :-) and might want to take advantage of it ...
 
read up here on certain topics (AACT, read pepper-gurus glog, read piri-piris glog (S-Africa)...) there are tons of good info here and most of it is nearly free and easy to do/copy...

by bags i mean the regular blag plant bags you see in most nurseries. is it better to grow 30 plants in 6 liter bags or 10 in 20 liter buckets, the bags are far cheaper so that's why i considered them.
 
yeah my growing season is basically all year cos i live in a very temperate zone i'm guessing USDA zone 10-13. also its semi arid here. i would love to get or make those air pruning bags but the materials are hard to find here
 
im not such a heavy pepper eater. but i love to grow so if i can get a couple of peppers per plant i will be happy, and i will save the seeds so i can replant next year again. i will probably put a few plants in the 20 liter buckets and keep those for a few years.

Welcome, and good luck with your season.
Your plants can be transplanted into larger containers at any time now. Bigger root zone = Bigger plant..........always a plus, unless you're limited with indoor space. Check through the growing glogs for ideas. Some folks here do live in climates such as yours.

i dont plan on keeping all the plants im growing, maybe just 10 or so, the rest i will sell, so i can get away with 0.75L bags for them, im thinking if i top or FIM my peper plants i can get away with using the smaller 6 liter bags for them, i will try that for a couple of them, im trying to be econimcal with soil becaues its so hard to get perlite, vermiculite anf peat moss here. im currently using this mix
 
8 parts indoor potting mix
4 parts compost
1 part Perlite
1 Part vermiculite
1 Part Spagnum peat moss
1 part hydrated water crystals
 
I mix in per gallon of mix:
1/2 cup lime
1/4 cup bone meal
5 grams nutrifeed fertilizer
 
so far this seems like a good mix but time will tell.
 
and for starting the seeds i use 1:1:1 Peat,Verm, perlite mix using water PHed to 6.7
 
how much do trinidad scorpions sell for in your area?

given this scenario ... I think you will be good to go... you know how to upgrade ...
 
your soil mix seems ok, just try to keep it as fluffy as can be ... you might even make root pouches from denim (jeans-fabric) ... just think of your peppers as tomatoes ... they like the same stuff (but use less fert).
 
One thing this hobby learned me is  to use stuff that is at hands instead of buying the latest-and-greatest.
 
you might also search for "dutch bucket" and you will wind up with a post i made ...its basically hydroponics on the cheap, and you can substitute the (expensive) perlite with coarse sand (roughly the same granularity as perlite). No need for a pump - just water by hand 2-4 times a day... just throwing out some random ideas here... again, it can be done on the cheap
 
prices for plants are highly local ... you can get them for cheap in the USA, but I sell them fairly expensive here (U$ 20 x plant - its not worth the hassle of meeting up folks for less $$$ for me ) ... and they do move (not getting rich, just some extra income so my hobby basically pays for itself) ... Local "e-bays" is where I advertise.

Hey Al

Thanx for the tip about using denim, had not considered that, I'm sure I can find that easily enough. Concerning ferts, I only use quater strength, and feed again weekly at quarter strength. I might even use some old pairs of jeans if I can't find sheets of denim.

thats mostly a function of root-space, good treatment and climate look at pepper-gurus glog ... he has some serious pepper-trees!
 
but to give you some sort of "depends" answer ... prepare for 1meter for the avg. c. chinense one season plant
