Hello there THPers!
Here are my thoughts on some of my recently acquired eastern chilli products.
SRIRACHA
• Grand Mountain Sriracha
Heat: 5/10
Flavor: 4/10
- not bad, not great. The infamous Huy Fong brand Sriracha wins hands down IMHO.
Huy Fong also rates a little higher heat wise.
Ingredients:
*Chilli
*Sugar
*Vinegar
*Garlic
*Salt
• Shark Brand Sriracha
Heat: 3/10
Flavor: 9/10
- not particularly hot (in fact not at all), but I love the taste!
I have been adding powder to kick it up a notch as I prefer it over Huy Fong.
Ingredients:
*Chilli
*Sugar
*Vinegar
*Garlic
*Salt
• Lingham's Sriracha
Heat: 5/10
Flavor: 2/10
- Not asian at all really, but anyway... To me, this one has a very bitter taste and unpleasant sting.
Not recommended!
Ingredients:
*Chilli
*Water
*Garlic
*Sugar
*Salt
*Vinegar
*Preservative (acetic & lactic acids)
*Thickener (415)
SIMILAR/GENERIC
• Koon Yick Wan Kee Chilli Sauce
Heat: 5/10
Flavor: 5/10
- Unusually thick, so much so I can't get ANY out of the bottle bar the use of a chop-stick!
Ingredients:
*White Vinegar
*Red Chilli
*Sweet Potato
*Sugar
*Salt
*Garlic
*Flavour Enhancer (E621)
• Fraternity Saigon Hot
Heat: 4/10
Flavor: 2/10
- Tastes like sweet chilli, and has an unfavorable gelatinous texture. Yucks!
I find it hard to believe that the chilli in this bottle deserves top spot on the ingredients list.
Ingredients:
*Chilli
*Sugar
*Garlic
*Salt
*Preservatives (Potassium sorbate & Sodium bisulfite)
* Xanthan Gum
OTHER
• Sun Brand Tuong Ot
Heat: 7/10
Flavor: 7/10
- Despite being slightly bitter, I really like this one, its amazingly good on dim sum, or dumplings.
This is nor a paste or sauce, but small chunks of chilli and garlic floating in water/vinegar.
Ingredients:
*Chilli
*Salt
*Water
*Vinegar
*Garlic
*Metabisulfate
• CJ brand Chogochujang
Heat: 2/10
Flavor: 9/10
- Anyone who has had Korean gochujang would probably agree it's an acquired taste. I can't get enough of the stuff. CJ is the best gochujang brand I have tried so far. It tastes just like the stuff in the local Korean BBQ!
I am getting really hungry now...
Ingredients: Ready, set, go!
*Red Pepper paste
*Fructose
*Wheat Flour
*Wheat Grain
*Salt
*Garlic
*Onion
*Seed Malt
*Monosodium Glutimate
*Sugar
*Vinegar
*Sesame Seed
*Ginger Oil
*Citric Acid
*Lemon Flavour
• Sichuan Pixiandouban Bean In Chilli Oil
Heat: 4.5/10
Flavor: 7/10
-This is not so much a sauce but great for cooking. It has a typical Szechuan flavour.
Ingredients:
*Red Chilli
*Broad Bean
*Salt
*Wheat Flour
• Gaofuji Shao Cai Tiao Bao
Heat: 4/10
Flavor: 6.5/10
- Once again, typical Szechuan flavour, but pastey as opposed to the latter.
Great on dumplings, pork buns, etc...
Ingredients:
*Chilli (65%)
*Broad Bean
*Salt
*Soy Sauce
*Wheat Flour
*Monosodium Glutomate
*Sugar
*Caramel
*Yeast Extact
*Ginger Powder
*Spice
I hope you enjoyed my obsessive rantings!
The scary part is, I might have done this even if I wasn't a member of THP.... LOL
