Geothermal is really cheap but not very efficient.

I would think that the back wall could be banked into a hill - you would benefit from the added insulation from the ground, and in addition, the back wall would not admit light anyways so it's really not an issue for that. I wonder if the amount that the wall could support would play into it, or if reinforcement of that wall might be an option.
