A Minnesnowta Chile Lover

Hi everyone, name's Eric, and I'm a capsaisinaholic. Believe it or not chiles grow fairly well in northwestern Minnesota, and I get bumper crops of anaheims every year, and there is little I cook that doesn't include them. I've also had success with lemon drop chiles, serranos and jalapenos, though some years are better than others.

It's time to expand my chile horizons, and I'd like to start with the Peruvian aji amarillo. I tried some in Mesa Arizona once many years ago and haven't forgotten the wonderful flavor of the stuff. I simply need to find a source for seed.

:welcome:  to the THP forums from SC!

I’m a huge fan of the Aji Amarillo’s as well! I was so happy last year to find some freshly frozen pods, direct from Peru, in a local Mexican mercado/grocery! That’s the closest to fresh I’ve yet to have - it made me love them even more than I already did from my initial tasting and eating the more traditionally available Amarillo jarred ‘paste’. If you have a local Mexican grocery or other ethnic/Hispanic orientated shop close by, I’d recommend looking for some!  ;)  Best of growing!

Thanks for the warm welcome (puns, yep, I'm one of those guys  ), I should have registered long ago, not sure why I waited.

Senior Fatali, I knew there'd be seed store suggestions within one or two responses! I've always gone to the larger general marketers like Jung, Park, etc., and though they touch on a few good chiles, I'm kinda finicky with the hotter pods I'd like to grow. Don't mistake me for an epicurean, I don't think I could hang a lip around a Butch T. or a Reaper just yet, but I have a huge taste for peppers.

Hey Alchymystic, you HAVE to try the Amarillo fresh. MmmmmmBOY!! That's why they're first on my list to grow. I'm told they're high maintenance, but I got the green thumb and my soil is magical....See you in the threads, eh?

Welcome from Cornwall.

I bought a couple aji lemon drop pod from edible ornamentals here in the UK. So I could see what the fuss was about.

Ate some as I walked around the show and saved a couple to deseed and grow.

Lovely taste. Looking forward to a great crop. Fingers crossed.
