Aji Charapita $25.000 per kilogram?

This season I discovered semillas.de and I've ordered there two times. Last time I got a free seed package because my order was above € 20. I didn't pay attention to which varierty it was until I planted some new seeds today. It turned out to be the Aji Chaparita, an unkown variety to me. So I looked it up, and I found this article. It says it's the world's most expensive chile, costing around $ 25,000 per kilo and 'highly sought after by pepper connoisseurs five-star restaurant chefs' . Did anyone ever hear about this? Is it even true? Seems a bit over the top to me.
 
I think we have a thread somewhere cracking fun about that article. Unfortunately you wont be a millionaire from your charapita plant.

Yeah what I thought, it sounded too good to be true. But with those numbers everything is worth checking out, lol! Growing it anyway because it's a pretty looking bastard.

This was in our local paper - there is a section on Basque peppers grown in NorCal fetching a pretty high price.

Maybe $25,000 for 1 kilo of seeds because of the rediculous amount of labor involved to deseed that many tiny peppers.

I agree though, this can't be true. But I seen quite the demand to start growing these after this story got around lol.
 
Similar to the great Saffron rush a few months back. Huge money in Saffron, if you have lots of acres and nearly free labor to harvest it. Probably make more money selling Jalapeños at a roadside stand at 20 for a dollar.

I wanted to acquire some seeds and grow these at some point because the plant looks cool as heck when podded up.  Now I can't grow them because it became 'hip' and people might mistake me for a moron.  Damn you, hipsters!  :drunk:
