Alex_K - 2022/2023 - Growing peppers in Brazil!

I think this season I will become a pepper plant hoarder as I received over 100 different varieties from my brother and ended up planting them all, I honestly don't know how I will accommodate so many plants!
My original plan for this season was the wild species, the native varieties from Brazil and a few import varieties that I found very interesting, however, now with over 100 imported varieties I think my plans have changed...
It's already spring here in Brazil and some varieties that I sowed in March, went through the winter and are already with their first pods while others that I sowed in August are still in their initial stages of growth.
I hope I don't have any major problems this season, one variety or another will surely die on the way but it's part of learning process right!?

Wish me luck! šŸ™‚

My list this season:

The wilds:

Thanks to @Wiriwiri for submitting some of the species! It has been very hard to acquire them since few online stores have them and those that do unfortunately do not ship to Brazil... These are the ones I got for this season.

Native from Brazil:

I decided to add Brazilian varieties this season, from the most common to those that are quite obscure and cultivated only by indigenous people or in a certain community/region.
Although there are many varieties here, there is no interest from universities or organizations in preserving or even registering them, the public/private sectors that research Capsicum varieties generally direct their studies only to the improvement of commercial varieties to resist pests or to increase the yield Heirloom varieties end up being left out.
These are the varieties that I managed to obtain... Being a country of continental dimensions, there are many other varieties that I probably will never know.

Import varieties:

The vast majority were given by my brother... Will I be able to grow all these varieties? Probably not! But I'll try to grow as much as I can, I'm thinking of rotating the varieties discarding the ones that have already produced to make room for those that haven't yet, I think that's what I can do...

Cheiro Minas (transl. Cheiro from Minas Gerais)

I don't know much about this pepper, even the supplier just told me that it was originally from the state of Minas Gerais, its shape is very reminiscent of Bode pepper, however its peach color is not found in the Bode variety, its smell is also milder compared to the Bode pepper that has a strong scent.

Cheiro Roxa (transl. Cheiro Purple)

Variety found in the state of Bahia and nearby regions, it has a beautiful shape and color and is appreciated in local cuisine, it has a good balance between heat and flavor.
My plant is not in the best shape, as it is in a shady place so it is not the best example of this variety. šŸ˜ž

Cheiro Pernambuco (transl. Cheiro from Pernambuco)

A very rare variety of 'Pimenta de cheiro' from state of Pernambuco, its pods are bullet-shaped and face upwaright, which is not very common in C. chinense, especially with medium-sized pods.
It is a variety with relatively thick flesh with heat close to that of a standard habanero and intense aroma, its pods starts light green, turn to purple, orange and finally red, always accompanied by purple/black blush, it is beautiful... It's one of my favorites of this season!šŸ˜Ž

@Tinkerbelle
I'm glad you're growing a Brazilian variety, the Cheiro Roxa is an excellent variety its purple pods are beautiful plus it has a nice heat and flavor!

@CaneDog
You are right CD the color is exactly the same as the PĆ©rola Laranja and the shape is similar to the Bode variety it's like a peach version of this pepper...
I definitely will keep the Cheiro Pernambuco for the next season it's a stunning plant! šŸ™‚

I bought the seeds from two places, Bakers Creek and Texas Hot Peppers... Both plants produced pods of different shapes, the one from texas produced much more than the one from Bakers, but as the two plants were in different places it is not a criterion for determine which produces more.
Of course, I haven't tried any of them, so I don't know which is hotter either... I think the best thing to do is make a sauce or something like that.

Reaper x SRTSL x Purple Reaper

I didn't expect much from this cross, however it has become one of my favs this season. The plant is beautiful with relatively compact growth for a C. chinense, black branches and dark green leaves with purple veins, very productive. The pods start out completely black and when ripe they take on shades of red and black, it's a very nice variety! šŸ˜Ž

Update... Things are getting slow here! šŸ˜…

Douglah Billyboy

A kind of yellow Douglah, its shape is more Habanero like and also not as hot as the original Douglah, good for sauces anyway

Aji Brazilian Bonanza

What I know it seems to be a (hotter) selected Dedo de MoƧa, a variety that is quite common here. Due to the name given to this variety, I believe that the people behind the selection are foreigners since we never use the word "aji" as a synonym for chili peppers in Portuguese.

Very interesting variety... purple flowers are not common in C. baccatum so I believe that at some point there was a cross between another species like C. praetermissum/C. rabenii its pods resemble a brazilian Dedo de MoƧa in terms of flavor and heat.

Great pics, as always, Alex. The 7 Pot Bubblegum Chocolate sure is pretty (but dangerous, haha). Also, the Big Jamaican sounds like an interesting pepper. I think I'll look for some seeds here in the States.

Hi again! I hope everyone are doing well! šŸ˜„

So continuing this thread, I would like to write a about the Bode ("Bode" transl. Goat) pepper this variety is originally found in the midwest and northeast of Brazil and used in typical dishes from that region, currently, it is also becoming common in other regions and can be found in markets all over the country.
In common all variants have a pronounced aroma and are quite productive.

Bode Red (Small var.)

This is the most common red variant of this pepper and is found in almost all regions of the country.
