Any ideas?

So a friend and fellow chili head grew these and gave me a few. Neither he or I know what they are. Heat level is in the orange hab range.

Those are still green/unripe , with a bit of dark sun discolouration that will normally turn to red.
Red bhut/ ghost ?

They do taste pretty green, I wouldn't be surprised if, whatever it is, is not ripe yet.

I would guess that the black is part of ripening and they probably ripen fully to red. They remind me of some smaller peppers that I'm growing now, but mine are more of a Thai with a bit less heat.

with that color and that amount of heat the only thing I can think of is Pimenta de Neyde

They look exactly like my unripened Pimenta Leopards. Not sure about the heat. Pimenta de Neyde x Bhut Jolokia.

These ripen to red with black splotches. Here's a pic of the pods the seeds I'm growing came from. Pods from 96strat last year.

I've never tried a pimenta before so I have nothing to compare it to but it sure looks a lot like Bhuter's pimenta leopards. I'll ask the guy who grew them to see if I can get any more info.

One more question. If these are in fact not ripe yet, will the seeds germinate if I try to save some and plant them next year?

when the pepper is ripe, there are more mature seeds. It will have mature seeds in green pods but only a fraction of the amount in a ripen pod
 
 
btw all my jalapeños were germinated from green pods

I'll second Bhuter, they look just like my Pimenta Leopards.

They definitely look ripe. Worst case, just leave a couple on the plant for longer and see if there's any change.
