Today, I finished my UDS. I have about $60 into it (including the drum). Was quite easy.
I procured a drum locally, it was lined but only $15.
The, I made a big fire to burn the liner off the inside, as a bonus it was hot enough to (mostly) remove the exterior paint.
I used a leaf blower to stoke it.
After a few hours, the paint was mostly gone and the liner was just a chalky residue. Bring on the wire wheel!
Always wear appropriate PPE! In this case, there was a surprising amount of debris in my mask.
The hardware was relatively cheap at the local big box store (all stainless steel).
I used a brush on high temp paint..
I made a charcoal basket with expanded metal, some bolts and a spare grill I had laying around from a retired smoker.
Finished!
With the ball valve open and the bung removed, it stays put at around 300 deg. I think the temp will be very easy to manage.
