Although some may claim it is, this controversial fish has its layer of scales hidden beneath a layer of skin. for a fish to be kosher it must have fins and scales. the interpretation says the scales should be visible to the eye and be removed easily. because of that fish like the swordfish that loses its scales, aren't kosher.
