bpiela's 2017 glog

Started some seeds today for the 2017 season.  Starting chinense's earlier than last year but at this time last year, I had already started a bunch of baccatum's and that was a mistake. Let's get this party started!

Sown 6 seeds of each of the following Chinense varieties today in a 60 cell Bio Dome.  Put 2 seeds per cell, so each variety takes up 3 cells...

Man! That's a lotta Aphid bastiges! The good news is that your plants seem strong enough to stand up to them at least in the short term. I know they look manky now, but if you can kill off the infestation the plants should grow out of it. We're pullin' for ya!

Gutted to see your plants covered in them wee beasie feckers, still time to pull it round and have a good season, rooting for you all the way Ben , good luck.

I have never seen an aphid attack like that .
Just reduce the numbers first with a simple flush of water down the drain . Then start with other treatments.

So, all plants were affected.  At least 2/3 of all plants are dead.  The ones that live look horrible.  I will be buying plants for this season.  My OW's and about 30 plants were moved to my greenhouse before the bloodbath, so those plants are doing fine.

Ben,so sorry that those pests created such havoc..they are so disgusting.,,and multiple faster than lightening..hard to get rid of too...just horrible..
Its a big turn off to see the damage they do..I don't know if Cross County is near you,( I believe that is the name?)  and you maybe can pick up some plants ,I know they have  a large selection..Good luck with those plants you were able to save.

Jeez Ben, that's a shame. If it were me I'd have gone industrial by now and done the Sevin, followed by a fog-bomb.

Never had an aphid that I know of in my life, CO potato bugs, mealy bugs, yes, but no aphids.

After seeing your pics I'm going to thank my stars...

So, I did some work today to figure out what I have left.   Out of 344 cells that germinated, 236 are gone.  So, got 108 plants that I can plant in both my garden and my sister's place.  Out of those 108, about 10 of them are healthy.  I hope I can bring them around.  Outside temps have just been crazy.  Too cold last week and over 90 this week.  I did buy some plants from Cross Country Nurseries, some Bonnie plants, some plants from 96Strat, and some from Piedmont Farms and Refining Fire Chiles.  I am not sure what to do next year.  I will probably reach out to folks to get any opinions or recommendations so that I can avoid this happening again.  Here is my list of plants that germinated and were looking good a month ago.

I have the pepper name followed by two numbers.  The first number is how many I had germinated, the second number is how many perished during the Aphid Wars.  If there is no second number, then none of that particular variety passed away.

So, I ordered up some ladybugs to kill the aphids.  I ordered them from Amazon.  They did a good job the few other times I used them this year...  Anyways, this past week, I had a business trip that parlayed into a guys weekend away in DC.  The ladybugs arrived after I left for the trip.  I asked my wife to put them in the grow area.  Seems like at least half of them were dead.  I arrived today to take a look and it is as if nothing had been done.  I have never seem such a mess before.  Here are a few pics

I am not sure what to do except by tons of Insecticidal soap, neem oil, etc and hit as many plants as I can daily.  Ordering more ladybugs would be a waste.  Takes about a week to receive them.

I think I brought them in via the OW's so I think I will try not doing any OW's next year.  I tried just about every spray there is and it never seems to do enough.  Trying to spray the tops and bottoms of all leaves on 300+ plants is a pita.  I think it needs to be done daily for something like 9 days, I am not sure.  I just have not been successful doing that.  I did purchase 1500 ladybugs a few times during the growing season.  The problem there is that it takes a week to get the bugs and a percentage of them arrive dead or soon dead.  I might do a few test runs during the summer to try to find out where the aphids are coming from.

Ben chin up buddy, we're all hoping you get through this, and the surviving plants do well for you and you can harvest some pods this season.
OW is great when it works but a PITA when you take the risk of bring in even a few unwanted guests.
I wish you well for rest of season and look forward to your "keepers" going outside and doing you proud. ( They will)

I think you nailed it Ben... The same thing happened to me this past winter. I tried to OW a Pubiscens inside and just couldnt get rid of the little bastiges. Unless I can find a way to ensure their eradication before I bring a plant inside I won't be doing any over-wintering in future either.

Good luck with the rest of your season!

I received an order today that I placed with Piedmont Farm and Gardens.  Wow!  These plants are huge.  These are not the standard plugs that are normally shipped.  And the packing materials are top notch.

Here is the box that the plants were shipped in.

And now the plants.  All large and ready to go.  This makes me feel like maybe I can get a few pods early this year..

Also, I was looking through my existing plants today and I noticed that I had misread one of the plant labels.  Turns out one of my Aji Painapple F2's lived.  It looks extremely horrible but there is hope.

Things starting to look up.

I sure hope things straighten out for you Ben. I've had my share of garden "issues" the last few years. All we can do is work out the best solution with what we have to work with. I had the Aphids 2 years in a row in my nursery, without anything brought in from the outside. But I do see the tiny little black ants. Terro is a really cool bait for the ants. It's basically sugar and boron; they bring it back home and BOOM!

Keep it green buddy!
