indoor Building a grow tent

Anyone here built their own custom grow tent for their needs? I want to build one similar to the ones you can buy but a shorter scale one for seedlings.

Anyone know where I can find the materials online?

How big are you talking?
Here's one for seedlings already built for about $40.

I've seen that, I am thinking about picking one up similar to that come spring for outside. I was thinking of building one similar to the black grow tents you can buy for indoor grows.

are you just looking for something to last you one season? if so then just bang something together out of 2x2's and 2x1's... and staple some hydro store panda film onto it. for seems and vent holes use that all weather LDPE tape that 3m makes.

if you want something that you can like... store in your closet when the indoor seasons over, just look on ebay at the cheapo tents, and treat them very gently, they should last several years i suspect. they dont look half bad either.

there's alot of competition out there for those grow tents. its getting pretty hard to justify building your own these days. they used to be like 250 for a 4x4 now you can get a 4x4 for like 130 bucks. the only company i can vouch for is lighthouse hydro. i have their mini 18" wide tent for seedlings, and the build quality is impressive and easily compares to the more expensive tents ive seen like the sun huts etc.

I'm looking to make a shorter style grow tent, something that would fit in an apartment better. I personally think that 3-4' is perfect for an indoor grow up to a certain point, and maybe 2'x2' or 2'x3' for a footprint would be perfect. I'm thinking about making it out of PVC piping, and get some of that panda film. Maybe, we'll see what happens. My grow box I have now is nice, and it keeps that cats away. But the size will only hold them for so long.
I don't know why you don't see grow tents made for seedling applications, they are all like 6' and taller. If I could find one that was 2' tall, I would be happy. Gives me plenty of time indoors to raise the seedlings for a little while and saves a ton of space.

they do actually. this is the one i own. its the perfect size for a single seed flat.
i have a 220 watt pll in this thing, plus a crummy little clip on fan. works great.

Wow, just watch the video on that tent, seems like that is what I have been looking for.

Does anyone else have this tent and want to share your experiences. Is this tent worth the money? The price seems kind of steep when you look at the cost of other tents that are twice the size. Granted the this tent might be much higher quality, but I'm not sure.

yea its expensive, but i was not interested in trying to build something better. if you dont need to put it away in the summer like i do, then consider a small cabinet and just saw holes in the sides for a 4" vent.

i know around here they sell used concrete blankets for around 10-15 dollars with a little nip and tuck u could make the size u need for about 40 dollars

I put in some of those wire shelves you get at home depot (I think rubber maid makes them). I was thinking how you could very easily make a nice grow tent out of that

Inside my small tent? theres really not enought height for that unless i put in some 2' t8's or something.

hey check this one out.

looks like its the same deal but way more volume. 24 wide, and 36 long... only 24 tall tho. this seems a way better deal if you wanted to do several trays, but still didnt want something full height.

i think a 1020 tray is 12" wide? so this is three seed flats wide.

this + and 8 bulb t8 would be golden for starting like 100s in 72 cell trays, or around 100 plants in 6 pack cells.

TBH i like this one better than mine! only problem is my shelf is only 18" wide, so this would stick out.

edit: wait, do they make 3' long t8's? lol i dont think they do.

bummer. you would have to do side by side 2' t8's... that would be like 16 bulbs? to much hassle!

heres a good one.. shane made this one...

Thanks for the props Denniz...the materials for this were cheap and assembly was easy. 2x2 lumber, silver sided styrofoam sheathing and some duct tape. Working really well so far, I used clamps at the corners so at season's end I can dismantle it and stow it away. I used mylar last year, this stuff works better for me because I can keep it in a cold garage and the lights keep the temp in there around 80 degrees. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Shane

Also, the shelves I use are metal and I use magnetic tape to attach some extra sheathing as added reflectors to the shelves. Might be exactly what you need...

Hi,
I think that tents are worth it these days. The mylar lining and zippers are heavy duty, and they've got velcro everywhere for cables and lights and vents and water lines. They can be assembled in less than 10 minutes, and taken down even more quickly. They clean up well, and they can support quite a bit of weight. Here in Europe, I have what's called a twinbox, which has a shelf so that I can start seedlings below, and grow large plants up top. I have another little tent with some CFL's. Just too cheap and easy to consider trying to buy all the bits and bobs over here. Everything is so expensive. here is one: view

Various grow tents and stuff. Nothing too expensive or big.

I thought we were building a tent not putting shelving in it. Here is what I was imagining:
put the shelf brackets on the wall put a shelf on the top and attach your lights and let reflective material hang down. Or you can attach the light to some hooks that go into the shelf brackets.
Then at a comfortable height put a shelf for plants. Under that put a bin to catch any mess you make. Voila' grown tent.
