Californians: how'd you do in the deep freeze?

There I was in my backyard screaming "take me, take me". unable to look at the carnage and yet I couldn't look away. Standing in my vomit and tears as a rescue mission to plant hades was born. I gloated about my endless growing season. The gods didn't punish me, they punished my children.

So they may not be dead. Do I really need to prune them?

I brought all my plants from 2012 into the garage and they are doing fine. I left a couple that didn't look so hot already outside and they are done. Our lows were in the mid to upper 20's. Now we're back to normal. Plants will go back outside today.

Not too bad, a one week "overwinter." ;) I'm sure we'll get another frost or two before spring, though.

Mine are in pots and trimmed down to green sticks (still outside) while the chickens work the beds. Hard to say if they are going to suffer for the cold we had--my bananas look pretty awful right now, though, so it was a bad frost by California standards. I'm thinking that the peppers will all bounce back just fine.

On the coast we have been hitting the low to mid 30s. The overwinters look fine. One more cold night. The food crops in the interior are taking a hit. It happens. I hear Las Vegas was 17

It didn't get to 17° here, the lowest it came down to was like 24°-26°F. It was forecasted to get to 17°, but no. We did get a warning for a "below freezing" temps tho. I don't have any wintering plants outside since 13 will be my first season growing heat. This week is gona be warmer it's forecasted to be mid to high 60's and high 30's to mid 40's at night. Not bad.

Got down to 7 degrees one night here in Lancaster....Just about killed all my overwinters in a coldframe :tear: The Habaneros seem to have taken it the best.

here we are currently at -4Farenheght.... growing seeds inside till may!
just put a plastic sheet over your plants and you should be fine with those "Cold" nights..

I bet we don't drop below freezing here in the west valley again. One night it got down to 30, and that was the coldest it has been since I moved to California. The lows are back up to upper 40's now and 50's next week. I'm still waiting until mid-February or so to plant out, because I've been known to be wrong.

I lost my B.B. Douglah... Well at least the branches and all the leaves. I cut it back to a twig.
I can now see all the damage on all the other plants, brown edges on the leaves. It looks like most will pull through well.

I am AMAZED by the hardiness of the Purple Bhut, It has always been my most hardy plant. The freeze didn't faze a single leaf?!?!?

I'm note sure of the zone here in Lancaster,CA, I have seen anywhere from 9a to 11....... But it got down to 16 degrees last night (7 degrees is the lowest so far this winter).
How cold does it get where you are?
I sure would like a superhot variety that can handle the cold here!!
So your purple bhut plant does well with cold?

It was only a few nights last week that hit 30ish... I wouldn't say the Purple Bhut is better suited to the cold just more resistant. It has always been a tougher plant. Even in the heat in the summer. I'm sure 1 more week of frost would have started to show, but it do better than all of my other (20ish) plants.

I have to point out, sure the purple bhut is my most hearty, it is also a slow grower and a medium producer. Also the pods don't have much heat for a bhut.
It is one of the nicest looking pepper plants, I suppose you could think of it like an ornamental bhut.

Here is a recent pic of it with some young pods.

Here is the choco hab after the first day of the frost (the same day as the photo above)
Notice the Purple Bhut to the right.

My plants are not liking the rain. I don't have anywhere to put them... guess I iwll have to make something for this season to put them under

Geez...a fellow Powinian! Don't take any crap from the haters above. We pay well for our temps out here so you have every right to complain. I had one Bird Aji that took the 25 degree nights in stride, but the rest were goners. Good luck on your grow this season and welcome to the site!

Shane even your Manzanos? how did they hold up to the freeze? Poway does get colder than SD by 10-15 degrees no? maybe that was just enough to break the camels back.

I had pulled them before they keeled over. Along with most of the others out there. I had a few hanging on, but that bird aji was still rockin. Crazy plant was still blooming after the first few frosts! Much colder up here, and my micro-climate is colder than the usual recorded Poway temps. I am still usually able to over winter plants by just placing them on the porch against the house.
