Can I use anise in a hot sauce?

I picked up a bulb(?) of anise at the farmers market yesterday and was thinking about using it for main complimentary flavor in a sauce. Licorice flavor Habanero Hot sauce was my thought. Once I remove the root is it safe to just puree and mix in then cook. I ask because I didn't check before making one with mango(red skin) and the fumes were almost toxic.

Any advice about the anise would be appreciated.

If not the composter will appreciate the anise. lol

Experimentation is a great idea, if you only do what everyone else does you will end up with what everyone else has. Perfection through experimentation works, just ask my parents, they had me.

Anise root versus mango, one is a hard root(assuming you are using the bulb) with low moisture content and the other is a moist juicy watery fruit. I hoped you peeled the mango before cooking it.

It will puree up nicely but before all this, when you start to cut up the anise root, if it smells like licorice then keep chopping BUT if it you find it has a fowl stench, its poison hemlock and toss it in the garbage and not the composter.

I hope your sauce turns out and is tasty.
