CaneDog 2019 Hirsute Pursuit – Rocotos, Wilds & Moar

So, here's the new glog for the coming season.  With the indoor grow culled pretty hard now I can focus more on getting ready for what's ahead.  Hoping for a great year, but I’m already a bit behind - the germinators are packed right now and I've still got a round of annuum seeds waiting for their turn.  I guess it wouldn’t feel much like pepper growing though if everything were going perfect.

My focus was going to be rocotos with a side of bonnets and some other stuff, but I found I kept planting more and more wilds. Eventually I just kinda went all-in with them and they took on co-main event status.

I’ll start things off with some pics of some of the earlier pube’s.  There’s not too many at this point. Unfortunately, the vast majority just went into germination.

First off, Costa Rica Red.  This is the CRR with flattened triangular pods.  I also have an OW CRR that’s a 3-4 lobed “boxy” variety.  I didn't get true seeds off this one last summer, so I have a few of these growing and crossing my fingers they grow true.

Rocoto DeSeda.  These guys were from a bush I’d OW’d a few years in a row, but it didn’t make it through this winter

Rocoto San Camillo

Gelbe Reisen Variant.  These are from true seeds off a plant I’ve been growing for a few years that was supposed to be Gelbe Riesen, but the pods are more orange vs yellow, rounder/less boxy, and just a touch smaller. I don’t know if it’s a natural variation or it might have crossed with a Costa Rica Orange, but it's a great plant. I have a few of these started and am curious what comes of them.

Giant Yellow Rocoto.  Suppose I should pinch that bud off.

Recently hatched Gelbe Riesen sprouts (the parent plant has been a beast for me for a while now) and CAP 217 Hyper-Pube.

That’s it for the rocotos for now.  Will try to post up some pics of the early wilds in a little bit.

Thanks for the good words.  Man, it's a tough time of year for me pepper-wise. Even though the weather has finally come around, the plants are still small and not yet producing, not much anyways. Flowers are about all I have.  I'm big-time envious of the solid harvest people are pulling.

So, I finally harvested my first zapotec, after leaving it on the plant for extra time just to be sure seeds were properly developed - or "seed" as it turned out.  At least it's an isolated seed.

The taste was quite good with noticeable sweetness (It did have time to get very ripe) and the heat was good, perhaps surprisingly good for a first pod that developed in cool weather.  I'm looking forward to trying more (and bigger) pods as the season develops, but early indications are positive.

So as I wait for pods to form and ripen I decided today would be a good day to run some crosses.  I did 3, all with pubes involved. Pictures of the open flowers are just representative of the variety; the crosses were of course done by cutting open closed buds.

looking great man!

that zapotec sure was stingy with the seed production.

Thanks and man is that the truth. I suppose that would be great for eating, but not when I want a bunch of isolated seed!  Think I'll pot this guy up and isolate the entire plant for next round of production. I plan to get a bunch of true seed one way or another.

That Zapotec gives the term 'isolated seed'
a whole new meaning  ;)

Quick lunch break post.

So, I have pictures of pods for a change. Quick update on my Aji Ayuyo. I have 2 of these and they do well both inside under the T5HO's and outside, whether hot or cool weather.  And they produce well for the size of plant and look cool. Hoping the pods taste great as advertised - they're supposed to be very flavorful.  That middle red one will be pulled for a first taste test next time I water.

And for grins, my BOC. Was in a dead heat with Bonda ma Jacques for the title of worst growing plant indoors, but is TCB outdoors.
The Bonda ma Jacques is still sucking wind and not worthy of a pic yet, but gradually improving.

And a couple rocoto pics.  These are my mini browns, which I've been keeping small as a kind of test.  Both produce well at a very compact size - I don't think either is a full foot tall from the dirt.

And this is a Rocoto San Isidro, which has very white/light colored flower.  I want to get it into the mix for crosses, based not only on the flower color but the strong production I usually get from it. It's just started to bloom, but I haven't seen any buds yet that would make good prospects for cross-pollination surgery.

Man...when it rains it pours over here! Lots of awesomeness to look at. Love the neuter pics. I do the same for my crosses...never thought about what Paul said, but yeah that would work and you wouldn't have to keep a limb under wraps for a couple weeks..and in that case you wouldn't have to remove the anthers because the risk of self pollination wouldn't be an issue. I am going to do this from now on not just for crosses, but isolation as well! Thanks for the a-ha moment Paul!

Back to your awesomeness CD...you never disappoint.

Really liked your surgery pics, CD. I guess you
could do that with pollen from the same plant
for isolated seed?

Yeah, what stc said.  I'm thinking it might also be a way to force your PdN x BMJ generations to breed among each other instead of self-pollinating, which could help with genetic diversity in the broader pool of genes that don't control your desired traits. Especially if you were growing out seeds someone send you from a different source, but similar generation, and you crossed them with your own plants.

Not that they really need any more vigor, heck, they seem to have that in spades!

Got keep busy somehow, unlike some people who must be working overtime just to pull in their crazy harvests.  ;)

Your pictures are great.  What sort of camera/lens are you using?

Thanks CTB, you obviously haven't been following my glog from the beginning - http://thehotpepper.com/topic/71003-canedog-2019-hirsute-pursuit-rocotos-wilds-moar/?p=1618231
