The second I see signs of them I try and just search the plant until I find the pest and just remove it and feed it to my fish. However they are not always that easy to find and may no longer be on the plant. They typically feed at night so that's the best time to search for them.
However if you don't find them you can always give your plant a light spray with safer brand caterpiller killer with BT. I use this as a last resort and it's very effective.

I use Safer Caterpillar killer as well.
Just make sure to spray it around sundown as UV light makes BT less effective.

+1 to Safer, it has saved my cabbage crop this year!
