Cayenne X Black Chiltepin

I cut open the flower with forceps, removed the anther, and applied some pollen to the stigma.  I then isolated that bud with some scotch tape (who said it had to be high tech?).

Probably black, erect, and a bit taller.
I sure hope so.

There is a black tepin variety? Where to find seeds?
I have not found seeds anywhere, it seems pretty rare.  We found the plant at a nursery around town.  I may have some extra seeds for trade, send me a pm.

does it stay black or it eventually goes red? Do you have a photo of a ripe black tepin?

They go from black to green to red, some of them just start green like normal ones.  I don't find them as hot or flavorful as the regular plants but they look a lot prettier.  I will try to get around to some photos of the plant, but it doesn't look very healthy; I think it has a disease or something.

Some of my chiltepins and piquins go black sometimes, i think its some kinda sun protection. I thought yours stayed black. Sounds interesting though, wonder if the chiles will point up or down. Mine sometimes randomly cross. I'm sure i will get some surprises this season

So far, all of mine have pointed up, and that's 100+ chiles.  I know of a few pepper varieties (jalapenos included) that turn black when they get too much sun.  I think the surprises are the best part of growing!

Some dry pods from the chiltepin, the stems are black and green but the fruit is red:

A shot of part of the plant with an unripe pod and a flower (sorry, I had to put my hand in there to get the camera to focus):

Finally an update about this plant worth sharing!

I have four Cayenne x BC plants, and one of them has set pods.

The flowers are quite beautiful, white with purple tipped petals.

As you can see, the pods themselves are erect and black [insert penis joke here] (I know, its technically a deep purple)

Can't wait to taste one ripe!

Any updates on that beauty?

The plant was looking absolutely fantastic for a while.  It was growing like a tree, was loaded with pods and flowers, and the leaves had turned a darker shade of green.  Unfortunately, the wind and heavy rain knocked it over during the monsoon.  It still lives, but it doesn't stand up straight.

The pods taste incredibly bitter, but they are hot.  I didn't expect a cross between two milder varieties to have the heat of a habanero.

I have two plants in the F1 producing fruit.  On the larger one (in the pics), the pods turn completely black after a time, while on the smaller one, only half the pod (facing the sun) turns black.  This two tone effect is rather stunning!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Still following with interest. Hope you keep posting updates. Please do. And if you feel like sharing F2...  :fireball:  (Cathy is always intrigued by anything purple/wild/hybrid.)
