Choosing seeds to save

My rule; when selecting pods to save and the plant is grown in proximity to another cultivar, choose pods as close to the center of the plant as possible.

My reasoning; pods on the periphery are more likely to be cross-polinated by adjacent plant, while those in the center of the plant are more likely to be self-pollinated.

This may or may not be accurate, but that is what I try go by.
