I decided to try something a little off the wall. I am a coffee roaster. I decided to try to germinate some green coffee (unroasted) to see if it would grow. After a 36 hour soak, I already have tap roots growing! Why can't peppers be this easy?
what kind of bean do you have?Scuba_Steve said:I decided to try something a little off the wall. I am a coffee roaster. I decided to try to germinate some green coffee (unroasted) to see if it would grow. After a 36 hour soak, I already have tap roots growing! Why can't peppers be this easy?

Ever come across any authentic Cuban bean? I used to get some of the best espresso at a Cuban bakery in WPB.Scuba_Steve said:

Oh No. If I can grow it, I would be in coffee heaven. It is germ-able correct? I did say germable, not gerbil.Scuba_Steve said:As a matter of fact I have a tiny bit. About 7 1/2 oz. Shhh Im not sure how legal it is lol. Its yours if you want it. It green right now. If your not a roaster, I can roast it for you as well. I would just need the desired roast level, although I suggest city+ for this particular bean.

Lets go with 20 to germ now, as to the rest, Keep it green, keep it safe.Scuba_Steve said:
It is in the same condition as my other coffees that I just germinated. I can throw a few beans in a cup and test it for you. Or I can just send some your way and let you try it. Do you want the whole bag, or just 20 beans to germinate?
That is funny as hell btw...
I have no clue if the soak did it or not. I did 36 hours though. After the soak the seed coat was mostly gone except for a few little spots.CAPCOM said:Soak for how long? Did the 36 hour soak contribute to the fungus susceptibility do you think?
I belong to a coop that orders hundreds of pounds of beans directly from farms across the world. They then distribute it to whomever wants it in the coop at cost plus like 25 cents a pound. They even have professional tasters that rate the coffee and decide if it is up to the coops standards prior to bulk ordering.Nuclieye said:My Castors are above ground in 24 hrs often. Never tried coffee, where did you get pre-roasted seed?
capsidadburn said:I think the pepper seeds will germ pretty fast using the same method. 2 - 3 days.
I bought some green beans from "Sweet Maria's", and got a used West Bend Poppery2 off ebay. There were some nice brews but I thing my inexperience didn't help. Too many hulls mixed in I think.
My 14 year old daughter has had some baurista training so it was fun for us.
Might try it again though!
Beans I tried;
Guatemala Huehuetenango Finca Regalito
Peru Vicente Palero Roque
Hawaii Kona Kowali Farm Typica
I think I liked the Kona best but again, newby.
Try growing it and harvesting it.Scuba_Steve said:I decided to try something a little off the wall. I am a coffee roaster. I decided to try to germinate some green coffee (unroasted) to see if it would grow. After a 36 hour soak, I already have tap roots growing! Why can't peppers be this easy?
