Contests for seed developement purposes?

Have question about perceived ethics.  I dont think there is anything wrong with this, but some folk might with all the competition out there.

What would folk think if I held a Biggest Habanero (or what ever) contest where there is a prize but the catch is you send me the pepper when you win before you get your prize?  The idea being to crowd source the development of various things.  In this example, it would be a large Habanero.  Maybe do one contest a year and the person's name / website gets on the anouncement and i I wind up selling the seeds or peppers, their info goes there too.  That way, if they are trying to sell the thing they get the advertising too?

Thoughts?

i think it sounds pretty cool. especially if you're transparent with your plans.
sounds like a fun way to crowdsource the genetics

you're still subject to the isolation "attempts" made by participants
and if its a season long contest the pepper will be mush by the time they send it if they win.
so you'd maybe have to just say pick your big winner pod and mail it to me right away so you can measure it and log the entry.

the genetics are such a crapshoot anyway i have a hard time seeing this pan out especialy well. but i like contests anyways

Edit: just remembered D3's community crossing project too. Just an open project with set expectations. Getting to share some seeds and participate in something cool. A contest is a fair bit more hands off though

Can you tell me more about D3's community crossing project?

On what I was thinking, I want to go with the idea of sort of Open Source seeds.  Not sure if you are old enough to remember when share ware was sold on disks.  But that is how I think of selling seeds.  Back in the day, you could sell free ware because you were really selling your labor of putting it on a disk and mailing it to people.  Same sort of concept.  The genetics are free an open, do with them what you want but folk who reproduce that dna can charge a fee for their labor.

It is really what is going on anyway, just putting it into words.  Well, it is what is going on everywhere other than what folk like Monsanto and others are doing.

It sounds like a great idea but how would you rule out a genetically large pod verses a pod that is large because of environmental/growing conditions? If the idea is to save the seeds, you might be disappointed with the size of future generations.

Basically &simply,
With D3's community crossing project, he's been coming up with all sorts of crosses and sending out the seeds of each generation to folks, to grow out and find the best phenos for each cross. Makes it easier than trying to do it all himself, plus he gets to share his cool varieties around.

Also, if you want a big Habanero, cross a Hab variety with a Bell. You'll eventually get a pheno or two that are very much hab like, except bigger. You'll also get a few phenos of heat-less habs, which are fairly popular. Now that I mention it, I might give it a go myself this season  :fireball:

exactly, that and it's fun for everyone involved. Group ownership sort of. Everyone who participated gets to take some measure of pride in the project. Not to mention we all get some good peppers out of it.

Are you still looking for participants?

It wouldnt guarantee anything, but what does?  Just seems like a fun thing to do with the possibility of developing the dna.  At a minimum, it shows potential.
