Datil

Anyone grow datil peppers? Wondering what the thoughts on them are? Thinking about giving one plant a try this year to see what happens.

the true datil is a wonderful peppr well worth growing, i grew them one and a friend who grows them every year
getting good uncrossed seed sometimes can be troublesome
and dont fall for the 'super datil' its basiclly a large fatalii from what i have witnessed first hand,
i ate them there fataliis for sure datils have a different flavor and not as hot also true datil are smaller
thanks your friend Joe

Im growing it also for the first time this year from two sources. For one I was gifted a few pods and keep the seeds. They tasted really good with some good heat.

I have two Datil plants that are about 4 years old now. They are about 3 feet tall and about as wide. They are good peppers habanero like heat and nice flavor. My plants produce tons. Way more than I can use. I make pineapple and peach sauces with them everyone at my work loves. I've made corn bread with them too, it's pretty good. I give shopping bags full of them all summer to a guy I know at the local flea market to use in his Cajun boiled peanuts in exchange for boiled peanuts lol

The Datil are the two in the ground, the one in the Lowes bucket was my Serrano but it died this fall. A nasty stinkbug infestation messed it up good then the last freeze killed it even though it was covered with a light. :(

This was a typical haul every couple months. This was what I picked in October.

I got some datil seeds from an aquaintance who is from near St Augustine, fl, which I understand is where they are most popular. He raved about how great they are, so we'll see if they live up to the hype.

In the past any Datil I've grown were a pain in the ass.

Nice plants that hate to set pods in our dry 100 degree dry summers.
I have some plants out there now I'm hoping will pod up this spring.
I had a plant that is 3 years old, budded like crazy but never sets pods.
Same thing with Lemon drops.
Great plants,no pods.

It's very dry hot down there smokemaster?
I've found that Datil loves high humidity level to grow well.

I chose to grow the Datil due to it being described as being hot, sweet and flavoursome. The plant from the first source may not be authentic as it is lacking in the sweetness department.

My youngest plant now is a Datil I started on xmas eve that popped up on new year's eve.

I too grow chillies in a hot dry climate. The performance of the mature plant reflected what Smokemaster has said. The yield of the plant is less than spectacular. I hope to have better luck with the second plant.

i got some seed from redtail, one plant has survived coming from dwc to soil and is looking promising, i hope to be testing pods at the end of aug 2013.
