hot-sauce Dave's Gourmet Insanity Sauce taste???

I've heard people often mention Dave's insanity sauce is a good one to go for as far as taste goes...

While it is hot for me so far it wasn't all that bad in the mouth for me... I think raw habaneros burn my mouth more and for longer but my stomach instantly disliked it.... as did my taste buds... not for the heat level... but for the disgusting taste...

I can eat 2 or 3 very hot whole habaneros in a row without problem in my stomach.. barely any reaction... however, within seconds of a fairly small amount of Dave's Insanity (whatever you would call a scoop with the flat end of takeout chopsticks would hold... maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon) it felt like the worst case of indigestion I've had... perhaps I should have eaten something before trying it but no sauce or pepper has done that before.... I tried it again after dinner and got a similar effect just not quite as intense... but it tasted just as bad...

To me the Insanity sauce tastes like someone took a bit of canned tomato paste, mixed up a whole bunch of crappy store bought generic chili powder and added a bit of oil and vinegar and chemical... yuck

This is the one I got.

Which Dave's insanity sauces are the ones people recommend, I thought this one was it, but this one will certainly not be a flavor enhancer for me.... I'll just use it to add heat to batches of chili or meat sauces...

Is it possible I got a bad batch or something or is this how many of the extract sauces taste like (or worse)??? Is it the extract doing this?

I know some chemicals taste absolutely horrible to me (like the red dye in some candies like Smarties etc..) so perhaps I have a horrible taste reaction to whatever Dave's extract is... but I sure as hell won't be buying his other sauces without someone giving me a sample first because while I like a hot sauce, I'd rather it not taste like ass

For now I think I'll stick with adding more of Marie Sharp's Beware... at least that stuff tastes great

welcome Zokambaa!

You are not alone in your reaction to that sauce! or to extracts in general. The gut response is not uncommon.

I don't know if you make it a practice to read labels, but reading the ingredients will give you a good hint as to the sauce.

There are MANY other sauces out there that use chiles and other ingredients that taste a whole lot better than Dave's.

If you just want to heat up a batch of chile, Dave's is fine. but for using on other foods where you want to taste the sauce, look elsewhere.

again, WELCOME!

Yeah... I thought I had a bad batch or something.... I just found some more reviews and one person said it tasted like dirt and extract.... I wish I saw that review before I went to the pepper sauce shop today....

I've never really had extract types and I do read labels.. but I didn't think they would have such a presence as far as taste goes....

With some of the newer extreme heat chilies out there now.. why do so many resort to foul tasting chemicals unless going to the extremes with the heat.

I know what you mean about the extract taste. I grew up used to it then tried a natural sauce a couple years back. I was converted then.

There are some great tasting extreme heat sauces out there now. But that last word..."now"... is probably the key word. Dave's insanity has been out for a LONG time, and I don't know if the Red Savina had even been crowned hottest pepper in the world when it came out. I'm guessing not~~~

Dave's was one of the first hot sauces other than Tabasco to hit the market. It was quite the novelty! Taste buds in general have been getting hotter over the last 50 years. When BBQ chips came out, they were the hottest on the market. Now look at all the "Hot" products on the shelves!

Have fun on your hot sauce odyssey, it's a great adventure!

Just a couple days ago, several of us got together for a wing challenge and the wing sauce was this nasty, lumpy, tomatoey, extract sauce. I threw up and everyone else had "intestinal distress"...to put it mildly.

Enjoy the adventure!

PS- are you growing chiles yet? That seems to be the next addiction after getting hooked on eating hot stuff.

:)

I'm in the process of cleaning out all the crap in my spare storage/bedroom so when that is done I think I'll start with growing some scotch bonnets and habaneros as those are presently some of my favorites....

Hello and Welcome from Atlanta! and I agree wholeheartedly with SL,There are wonderful sauces that are hotter than Daves but dont have extract.Mostly extracts suck! However, I have had an extract sauce from the creator that was outstanding!

I will agree there as I have tried one a friend has and the creator is good at flavoring when using extract.

Well I've tried it a few more times tonight... I think the first time the amount was maybe 1/4 of a teaspoon.. I moved up to an actual 1/2 measuring spoon now... but made sure to have some nice greasy roast chicken in my stomach already...

Dave's Insanity still tastes like horrible dirty ass with rancid tomato paste but at least my stomach didn't have much of a problem this time...it still didn't like it... but it is tolerable now...

I have to find some way to mix this in with something so I can't taste it or somehow works with whatever I mix it with... perhaps a bit of a sweet thai chili sauce might work

I tried mixing it with some sweeter mild Caribbean sauce I had from the supermarket but had been neglecting because it was a bit too sweet and way too mild...the combo is better... still not good but ok now if I mix it with other stuff...

I wonder if the people who LIKE the taste of Dave's Insanity sauce are heavy smokers, or have been eating sooooo many super hot extract sauces that they can no longer taste the nasty of this stuff.

The heat of a sauce is not a big deal for me, if a little too hot I can usually give it a little time and I'm good, but the taste is key for me in any sauce... if it tastes good straight it will probably taste good with other things too

I have some limes left over in my fridge.... perhaps that will make it taste a bit better...

You guys are making me blush.

I'm throwing the bullshit flag on this one Creator...you know you love it...

Insanity sauce....yuck...and I am a smoker...bought a bottle a few years back...tasted it and threw it straight in the trash...nothing like throwing money away...

IMO people that eat it have never had a great extract like DefCon Zero

Well..................I have (opened and in my fridge) the original Insanity, the Total Insanity, and the Ultimate Insanity sauces....all of which have their uses. They're certainly NOT a bring to the table "shakin'" sauce for sure....the extract aftertaste is way too strong. But a couple drops in a pot of soup....or a pot roast?...They work quite well for that. I especially love to add it to my sour cream-based dips. The heat really pushes through and won't alter the consistency. I also have Dave's Ghost Pepper sauce....but that's a completely different animal!

The Creator's ZERO is second to none...I won't deny that!....but ZERO is kinda pricey and worth discriminating what I use it for.

Next time, AJ, send me your discards....I'm not too proud!!

Paulky, you are right about adding it to other foods as probably the best way to use Daves's. Insanity Sauce was my gateway drug, (I mean sauce) a long time ago when I needed to have a quick and easy boost to heat in foods and I did not have any green chiles thawed out. Now that I joined the superhot world, I don't touch it. I just have too many other choices that taste great also. I gave all my bottles of Insanity Sauce to my daughter because she always adds about 5 drops to the beans when making bean burritos. The extract flavor is lost when it is mixed in foods and used in moderation.

Zokambaa,

Like everyone has said, sauces that include pepper exract as an ingredient seem to get a fair amount of reaction from some people about the chemical taste. However these sauces like Dave's would not be as big of a brand that they are without a solid fan base. Just like any Sauce, there is a taste for everyone. I am with you though, for myself I tend to stay clear of the extract based sauces.

If your are looking for something new to try, I have always been a fan of Melinda's Sauces made by Figueroa Brothers. They have a very complete line and use all natural ingedients. I just love their Naga Jolokia Sauce way hot but great flavor. It is absolutly awesome used in a pasta sauce. It is not as hot as you could get from some Ghost Pepper Sauces but it is by far top notch stuff.

Ooops. Double or triple clicked enter and ended up with two of the same posts. Didn't see how to delete one just able to edit it with this new msg. Anyone know how to delete duplicates???

The extract has to be it... I keep trying it in stuff but it always ends up horrible if I put enough in for the heat... I keep tasting that nasty extract every time I'l lkeep trying them and going with the hotter peppers before I choose extracts again... funny though unless Capsicum oil is different than the extracts.. whatever Marie Sharp's has in her hottest sauces, I can't taste anything like that Daves stuff... granted they aren't so hot.. with the plain habaneros added... but If she came up with a sauce with some of the hotter peppers added to her sauces would fit the bill well enough for me...

since Melinda's are heavily "borrowed" from Marie Sharps... perhaps the hotter pepper versions of Melinda's would work for now.... although I don't really like the idea of supporting someone like Melinda what with the rumored ripoff Melindas did when they broke away from Marie Sharp's

I think what they ment was Melinda's Naga sauce was good but not as hot as some other Naga or Ghost pepper sauces made by other companies...

I've heard the same thing from people who had their XXXX sauce... that it tasted great but was not quite as hot as they expected it would be...

But while I haven't had any Naga sauces yet... it looked like Neil's review of Melinda's Naga sauce found it fairly warm... and that guy could probably eat flaming Nepalm and just say it was a little warm at the back of his throat

Just curious which "Ghost Pepper" other then the Naga Jolokia the sauces are made from?
