Devv-2017-Having a good time in the dirt

Another season has come and gone. Time to start a new one!

Although I did already a few weeks ago :shh: . After last years dismal (late) start I jumped in a bit early to insure I could have viable plants come dirt day. I can always cut them back, if I need to. I have to compile a list yet, but I'm growing the full spectrum. Sweets, to supers, based upon what we will actually use. Most of my list is to make LB happy; I'm really glad to see her infuse peppers in more and more dishes. Can't beat that when the wife takes interest ;)

Not the best pic; but the shelf is being sketchy, and I don't need all the babies bouncing off the floor.

Good luck to all this season

Glad to see you are getting some ripe rocoto! Aji oro pods are delicious, and really juicy.

Thanks Dale!

Been nibbling on one of the mini reds just now. I'm sold! It's quite juicy, with good flavor, and the heat is perfect for a pepper to just snack on. ;)

Thanks again for the seeds!

Dang Scott!

I just got caught up. You've had some troubles lately. I have a bunch of plants. I'll send you a bunch if you want. Won't cost you a dime.

I hope things turn around for you. I'm sold on the testing. I'm going to test every year. I hate wondering what's going on.

Take care my friend.

Hi Chuck!

Thanks for the offer ;)  I have enough plants that even if they don't produce really well I should be loaded. I have about 10 in pots so I should be good working it both ways.

I most definitely will test the soil in February.

I can't wait to see your grow this season!

Very cool-looking broadfork beginnings Scott! That should do some serious soil aerating! As we get older, it gets tougher to get up off our knees, and I love how well this tool works while keeping your back straight. How long did you end up making the tines?

Love the color that's beginning to show on your pods, and wowed by the cross-section of varieties. Your season must be heating up fast if you're putting up the shade netting already!

Thanks Rick!

I welded the tines up yesterday; and today I bought 2 wheelbarrow handles. Cost was $16 each. I also made the brackets for the handles out of some leftover 14 gauge flat stock. It's 8"s wide so I cut it into 4" high pieces about 6.5"s long and scribed the bend spots with a metal cutting chop saw. Then heated and made the bends. These were made to fit the handles. Tomorrow I just have to grind saddles in the brackets to fit the square stock and weld them on after I close the one open side.

I hear ya about the knees. I'm now doing quad exercises 5 days a week. I keep telling myself this older age is a privilege! ;)

I put the shade up because we're having color show and that attracts they Mocking birds, that and intense sun. It's all locked down now for the most part. LB picked the first three maters this afternoon. So as the great Peach harvest of 2017 closes we move into maters :shh:

This idea is now going to be used by a friend who grows lots of toms this year.I keep telling him to stop choking his plants with cages.

I like the tee posts but they're too hard to pull up ;)  I'm using 54" cages on most of them with 3/8" rebar to support them. They still grow over them, I just let them go ;)

You're welcome! It looks like you are putting your green thumb to work on those plants. They look really healthy. I plan on pickling a bunch of my mini red rocoto pods this year. I got way too many last year to eat fresh, and I figure they would be great pickled snacking peppers, or thrown onto a sub sammie.

Lots of pods working for you Scott.Good to see the sunshade up and running. That netting is strong stuff if you had hail going thru it you would be in a fix caught outside in that storm. To bad about those in the Tornado last weekend buddy,

Excellent! I can't wait to see the finished product!

We have Mockingbirds here but they don't seem interested in chiles. Nice you got peaches before the critters did and double nice to be getting tomatoes! Rock on Scott!

Thanks Dale,

We had some with supper, and the wife liked the fact that the burn was short. So she's sold too!

Thanks Randy,

It's good to see the garden grow this year versus all the plants cut down by Field Rats. The garden is fenced in tight, that and we've been rat hunting along with the dogs ;)  I think they decided to move on out, what was left of them.

That hail storm was scary, we have a metal roof and it was loud!

I hope to get close to finished tomorrow. It was nice beating the Raccoons to the Peaches ;)

A few pics:

All the Annuum's are doing what they're supposed to....

249.jpg

Gochu, been pulling a pod here and there.

250.jpg

Just found these two on the sprawling Aji Amarillo

Jalapeno has a few.

252.jpg

Poblano's are happy. We picked one yesterday to go with some Fajitas.

A pair of B.O.C.'s in pots. I still haven't figured out the Chinense in the dirt. It's the same dirt the maters and Annuum's are in. Always good to have backups :shh:

Getting ready!

One of the growdown plants. Getting there!

Onions coming in about 4 weeks early. I pull them when the tops fall over. Not as large as last seasons; but they will eat :D
LB just loves it when I drag them in the house. I did so because the humidity is through the roof and, ehem, "they say it's going to rain". I'd like to see that ;)
