Devv-2017-Having a good time in the dirt

Another season has come and gone. Time to start a new one!
 
Although I did already a few weeks ago :shh: . After last years dismal (late) start I jumped in a bit early to insure I could have viable plants come dirt day. I can always cut them back, if I need to. I have to compile a list yet, but I'm growing the full spectrum. Sweets, to supers, based upon what we will actually use. Most of my list is to make LB happy; I'm really glad to see her infuse peppers in more and more dishes. Can't beat that when the wife takes interest ;)

Not the best pic; but the shelf is being sketchy, and I don't need all the babies bouncing off the floor.

All the Annuums are way ahead, which is OK. They will hit the garden dirt first as they don't care so much about the temps as the Chinense, which are still "low riders" ;)

Oh yeah, will do that tomorrow. IRT is in the house!
 
I had the kids with their kids over this weekend, and the weather was in drizzle mode, so no garden prep done.
 
However I did get in there for a bit today and spread out the homemade biochar. I had just enough to cover the 100sq ft Hugel bed with a thin layer. Used all of it, about 16 gallons worth. I need to make more, time is the issue. I also added a thin layer of shredded mulch mixed with cow manure from last year, so it's mature. A ton of work left to do! The good thing is my bum shoulder is coming around. I'll be in the garden as time allows, AND need to up-pot some plants. I had quite a few ask about how I grow maters last year, so I'm going to do a pictorial on that subject around March 1st :shh: :rolleyes:

I'm looking forward to the IRT test, and once the heat rolls in I can cover it with mulch so it doesn't overheat. If the current weather would hold I'd plant today. We're having April weather for 3 weeks now. Just crazy!

Looking at the extended forecast for Devine I see that they're predicting an overnight low of 32 degrees for this coming Tuesday, but lows in the 40s for the rest of the month. I'd put the IRT down now to begin warming the soil, and plant out on wednesday... covering the plants with a low row cover until the overnight lows hold consistently in the upper 50s to low 60s. Covering the IRT with mulch during the heat of midsummer sounds like a good idea. You put up shade cloth too don't you? Good luck Scott... I'll be watching to see how the experiment comes out for you. Cheers!

I probably won't have the time, too much going on. I'll be happy with a March 1st dirt day for the experiment, that's my usual Mater day. Peppers usually April 1st. If I can swing it earlier I will ;)  Thanks for the encouragement!
 
Started up-potting the larger plants this weekend, they really were not root bound, but they were really crowded in the 3.5" pots.

Well quite a few. I love the Reapers, very hot but great flavor, Scotch Bonnets, The JA Habs, NagBrrains, Gochu's, Large Orange Thai, and pretty much everything I have growing. Been growing the hots for a while now and certainly have a favorite list ;)  And I can't forget the easy on the pallet that are for the wife (LB).
