Devv-2018-Loving life in the dirt

Here we go again! ;)

This year will be a mix of in the dirt and container growing. Mostly in the dirt. I have some OW's going, 5 are cut back, 6 are pubes that still spend time outdoors as the weather allows. I have pH issues in the dirt, working on that, and hoping for some better results this season. One thing the wife and I decided is to NOT grow into the fall again. I was pulling plants the same weekend I started my seeds. I'm using 4 2 bulb T8's with 6,500K bulbs, and 1 4 bulb T5 with I believe 6,500K bulbs.

So here's the list:

You betcha. A really good workout. I'm surprised, today I have just the mildest ache in my right bicep. I guess my exercise regime and all the yard work helps. Not bad for being 60 in October. ;)

I don't have a slab just showing it when empty. But here's a pic with the tank in place, and the gutters are just getting started....

I really wanted the tank off the shop, for several reasons. Like it's in the way there ;) But the metal roof overhang is like 5"s on the shop.

How are you gonna get the water to your garden Scott? Will you be using a pump or gravity feed? I'm told that you need the water source to be at least 4 feet above the drippers if you plan to use gravity for a low-pressure system.

It's a lot of work, but I'll bet your water tank pays off bigtime... Good on ya!

Some quick garden pics, and it's rather warm out there, 86° at the moment.

Year 2 of the hugel bed. It settled some and I added more dirt soil from the garden to bring it back up to where it should be.

Zapotec Jalapeno's setting already.

No pods on the Chinense yet, but they're flowering. I wish they would take the hint from the Annuum's which are 30 days younger and get on with the program ;)

Hi Rick!

I'm going to bury 1.5" PVC, schedule 40, run that to the garden and just hand water this year. I'll use the Rainbird/wobblers when we go to NY next week. Hoping the forecast is true and the rain catcher fills up a bit next weekend. The garden is about 10' lower than the tank, maybe more. So I'll see what's happening once it gets some water in it ;)

It really needs to rain here, I'm out of rain water, ran out today :shh: And I'll be mixing the Ph down with the well water until we see some rain. I've been using about 25 gallons to water the peppers and the tom's each time I water lately. Tomorrow I need to water the Garlic, Onions, and Potatoes...and the rest ;)

Pdn x bonda sure did take a while to fork, love when that happens. So cool to see plants in the ground too, still a while to go around here.

And they're getting rather tall too!

My grow here is a rather short season for most of the plants. Come late June we're pretty much done. At that time of the year we'll just keep some mainstays that we eat on a regular basis going until a frost hits. I may not even bother with that this year. I was still pulling pods from plants when I started this seasons grow..and that gets tiresome..LOL

Seeing pics of all those Annuums setting pods, we're really pleased for you buddy! We'll follow on as we can when the weather co-operates... another Nor'easter with snow predicted for tomorrow, but our Jalapenos and a few other Annuums are hooking up here today.

Looking amazing Scott

Thanks Lourens!

Been as busy as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest getting ready for a trip to NY Thursday morning. The water storage is as done as I could get it. Anchored and ready for water. We "may" get storms when we're away, and even though it's tied down I added 100 gallons of water to it with the correct mix of Ph down. So it's not going anywhere. Gutters are 99% completed with debris screens to keep the leaves out. Rainbird irrigation system to run the wobblers has been tested, and a second test is set for tomorrow afternoon when I get home. The container plants have been moved out of direct sun.

As you can tell I'm a bit paranoid about leaving the garden this time of the year...I just don't know how you can go all week not checking on your plants ;)

Thanks Rick!

They say 15"s to hit Long Island tomorrow, and we fly in Thursday. Should be some snow on the ground!

I need to take some more pics if I have the time before we leave. The Gochu's have pods too ;)

I feel I did the right thing starting the plants a few weeks earlier this season. I should get spring pods!

That is awesome Scott. Hell, you keep yourself busy! But job well done. It never really ends with irrigation - you think you're done and there is always something else going wrong or needing adjustments lol - in my experience at least. I have a float valve in my tank and I just couldn't get the bleeding thing to stop dripping at the collar. So now I have a Mint plant under it and the drip has a purpose lol

Going away is the worst I won't lie. But having an automated watering system sure takes a load off the mind (worrying). My biggest concern is the irrigation coming on automatically when it rains. Also getting the right intervals between waterings and the right amount of watering is important. So next year I will be looking at drip irrigation and a rain sensor to override the irrigation should there be rain or the soil be wet enough already. I have micro mist nozzles and while they do work out cheaper here than using drip nozzles, they do come with their own set of issues.
