Devv's 2015 - 16, Life is good!

Well here we go again!

I just got finished planting seeds for 70 plants. Scaling back a bit this year; last year was a lot of work! That and I have to do more than garden this season ;)

My apologies as I can't remember shit where I got all the seeds from. Some were harvested from pods some I saved, and some were sent to me. I can say this 99% originated from the most generous THP members!

I leaned more towards peppers my wife can eat. After all she helped me quite a bit, I might as well grow some for her ;)

Last season was a challenge regarding what was what. I eventually figured them out, but was not happy with the confusion. And yeah, I'm easily confused.

Here's a pic of the 70 starters:

1.jpg

Trying something different, the Jiffy's are numbered and will be entered into a spreadsheet. As they pop, they will go into the solo cups with permanent marker to label them.

This year I'm starting things in the converted hunting room (man cave?). LB wanted the extra bedroom back ;)  The room is part of the shop; 24x8 and insulated. It's been rather nasty for the last 4 or 5 days, damp and temps below 52°, but it was 68° in there a few minutes ago. Also I'm trying a heating mat to help with germination, which was abysmal IMHO last year.

Anyone who knows how I fly, knows I like to grow in the dirt. I have a few in containers from last season, but they just don't do as well.

I put a ton (literally) of work into the soil since the start of last season.

I feel soil preparation is the key to success:

1214.jpg

1216.jpg

I tilled in over 24 yards of RCW and 10 yards of shredded leaves after pulling the plants in the fall.

2.jpg

I then planted Crimson Clover and Rye as a cover crop, this pic is from 2 weeks ago..

3.jpg

The area I planted the cover crop in is 2,300 to 2,500 square feet. Half is framed for sunshade. A must in the 100% summer sun the garden gets. There's some Comfrey of the left ;)

Dec. 6th I tilled in the whole shootin' match. I waited too long. But I do like it when it darkens up. This is what it looks like after 2 2" deep passes. If you wait too long the roots form a sod, this makes for a bad day of tilling. I got this far and decided to call it. Shiner time!

Once I'm sure most is dead and wont come back when I water crop 2 goes in.

On 12-10

The grass on top has dried, and rain is forecast through Sunday (yeah right), so I tilled again. It brought up the grass from below and now the garden looks like last Sunday. I went a couple of notches deeper this time to break up more of the roots. I spread rye seed and watered for 45 minutes. It should come up quickly as the weather is warm for a week or more. 50's-70's.

This is the garden today, the second cover crop is just coming up. And I have to prep an area for onions, which hit the dirt January 15th. The rest gets tilled in at the end of the month.

I fly out of here tomorrow afternoon, and won't be back until a week from now. So I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

 Thanks Dave,

I had to look up Weimaraner, they do look very similar ;)

 Thanks Ryme ;)

Today I went to my two docs and both were pleased with my progress. I've been hard at it getting back to 100%, mixed 65 bags of concrete (by hand) over the last 4-5 weekends. A good workout in the Tejas heat
Well it's fall planting time around here. YES!

I get to garden again!

It's nons this time of year but the garlic is in, strawberries get planted tomorrow. The raised beds will be dog proof by the weekend and the cool weather crops will be planted.

I still have a few pepper plants in bags and pots that soon will hit the full sun again.

Life is good!
Scott, awesome to hear you are in full swing again - can't wait to see this glog come alive with your gardening magic!

Glad to hear your back on the mend and that the garden is coming around. Seems like every time I think about going out and starting on the raised beds I want to put in another Hurricane shows up off coast and while it doesn't slam us it gives us a ton of rain and I'm delayed again :( Well, it's giving my hand the time it needs to heal and I'll get them build during the dry season.

Take care Brother and keep getting better!

I have some seeds that are just now coming up, the first round was a disaster, as was last season for me.

Many thanks for those who have wished me well! Last year this time was a scary time, one I will never forget.

I've done  ton of catch-up work over the winter and no light at the end of the tunnel yet, but I'm slowly whittling down the list, which is a mile long.

Due to my sensitivity to heat from the extreme nuking I received from the meds, the grow is limited to hab-heat and below. Funny thing, my Blue Lacy pups ate all of my markers, so the seedlings are who knows what at this point.

The fun part is I have a grow, even if it's weak

Off to Puerto Rico for a family wedding (Nephew) see ya soon.

Scott

Scott I've been concerned for you & was hopping you was still on the mend.
I've have had a bumpy start myself this season & there nothing wrong with habanero/scotch bonnet heat most of my grow is that level.
There was a time that Hab level was the super hot level still is for most people around here lol
Hope you are having/had a good visit in Puerto Rico
Best of luck to you this season & wishing you good health

Glad to see you creeping back into your garden Scott. The heat level is not as important as you ability to gets yer hands in the dirt.Enjoy your wedding trip.

Best of luck on the new grow and to your health.

Thanks Jeff!

Health is good! My pulmonologist figured out my condition was 52 years old (injury when I was 5) and put me on a program I religously follow. Life is good!

Glad to see you back around! I've been concerned about you as well.  I hope your trip goes well.
 Hi Andy!

Doing well! And the trip was a blast!

47 friends and family made the trip, the brides family was totally impressed with our turn out. The wedding and reception was top notch, they spared no expense.

So the trip was fantastic, first time I have left the US since I was 2. I got hooked on their local coffee, very mild and potent. AND, Puerto Rico is rum country, need I say more :P

So I planted seeds in mid January, 3 seeds per plug, 1 jiffy plug out of like 40 germed,  the MOA. 2 came up and something ate them! But the 3rd seed germed and I have one for sure.

The second round I planted in those 6 per tray planters you get when you buy from the stores. I planted:

MOA
JA Habs
Urfa's
Kurts
Nardello's
Billy Biker's
Jal's
Numex
Anaheim

Yeah weak on heat, the wife loves the sweet ones and I'm working on my tolerance, for a while she could eat hotter foods than me ( I passed her already :onfire: )

Being I stuck out on #1 try, I purchased a few from the local store, Orange Habs, Jals, Pob's, Serrano's, and a stuffing pepper of which I can't remember, too lazy to go look..LOL

So my rheumatologist was a $600 per month waste of $$$

So I swapped the funds for this:

rt.jpg

Couldn't resist the 485HP  Been 35 years since I had a car, and have been loving these. Now I'm pain free ;)

On to the garden....

I knew rain was coming, I just got home and got 7 peppers in the ground....today 3 were gone (I'll be hunting)

3.JPG

So I caged the rest with tomato cages and wrapped tin foil around the bottom (didn't even get hollered at for using the foil)

12.JPG

Second round seedlings, I guess after the labels were trashed, I'll find out what's what later. It's all good. I have peppers!

8.JPG

Store bought in the pots and youngin's I tranplanted into the solos before the trip.

A few shots of the garden today:

4.JPG

Plenty of "maters" this year. LB griped when we had to buy. When I was down, she didn't know how I used calmag foilar applications to prevent BER. That and she was busy running me around, so we lost 95% of the crop to BER and the birds. NOT THIS YEAR!
I also moved the grapes into the garden. This equals less space, and less work for me, as it limits me some :shh:
Bird netting will be ordered for sure!

6.JPG

Garlic planted 9/15, onions planted 1/15. I think we'll have enough. A little Windchicken experiment going on in the background, gonna let it marinate until next spring.

Before I close for the night, my guardians

Marli. She's a Blue Lacy

Marli's sister Charli. Both are 10.5 months old. High energy pups!

Great to be back and cheers to all!

Hard to see the garden when I keep staring at that sweet ride! Nice car man!!! Oh yeah...the garden looks ok too I think...lemme go back and check...
Yeah, the ride is a fair weather ride only. It will never see the streets on a rainy day. The 04 PU is the way to go when it's not sunny :shh:

LOL, I have spent time waxing , when I should have been in the garden. Just don't tell anyone...

I get it. My 9 month old HIGH energy pup is my sorta the guardian herself. Mostly she plays in the garlic bed where I wish she didn't......Garlic is surviving so far.

Hey Scott,
Glad you are doing well and got such a great start to your garden. Hope you have a great year! Oh, and here's my pepper guardian last season trying not to trample some habs and tomatoes I had planted in from of the house. :)

Beautiful car, beautiful garden, beautiful dogs! Nice update.

I love the way your garden is set up!  What are the trees you have back there under the woodchips?
