Dinner at local Thai Restaurant

My wife and I had dinner at a local Chineese / Thai restaurant the other night that is walking distance from our house. I ordered the Chicken Curry and asked for it Thai Hot or what they called level 10. Now I know that my heat tolerance has increased but what I was served was not even noticeable. I politely called the waitress over and explained that it wasn’t hot which produced a quizzical look but she took it back to the kitchen and a few minutes later brought it back out. I had to send it back a second time and this time I could feel a little itch of heat but back it went again. I excused myself and went to the car where I had some really good Scorpion Yellow powder. When I got back to the table my plate was there and all the kitchen staff was standing at the door to the kitchen watching me. I took 1 bite and then added the Scorpion powder to it and at that point the chef came over. He looked at me as I took a bite added a touch more Scorpion, tasted and nodded my head that it was now hot. So, the chef looks at me and says that still wasn’t hot to you? I said no but it was perfect with the Scorpion powder. Now I have never seen or even heard of a chef asking to taste customer’s food but this one did. I allowed him a taste and he was brought a spoon and took a nice bite. He chewed 1 time and his eyes got as big as saucers, he started fanning his mouth and when handed a glass of water downed it fast and filled his mouth with ice then ran for the kitchen and I assume some milk.

Long story short

Thai Curry Chicken……………$8.95
Dinner with Wife……………….$42.78
Burning out the Chef………….$Priceless

FYI dinner was comp’d. I didn’t get any pics at the restaurant but here’s the left overs and they were really good after having some time for the flavors to get all happy.

So why did they comp the dinner, cause it wasnt spicey? That part has me confsued. As it seemed everything was good but the the spicey level

Well as the manager said if I have to send my meal back 3 times and it's still not right then something wasn't getting done right. Besides, he was still laughing when he came over to tell me. I even offered to pay for my wife's meal and of course the al-key-haul we enjoyed with our meal. But he said no it was all comp'd. I think he did it because he really enjoyed seeing the Head Chef get his face fried.

Good times, yep good times

Awesome story, thanks for the morning laugh! I can see his face now...."YEOW that's hot!!!"

What was funny was seeing all of the employees fighting back the laughter. One of the waiters was absolutly red in the face trying not to let it out. I just keep thinking what if I it had been Butch T powder I had with me instead of just Scorpion Yellow. Guess next time I'll have to give the warning disclaimer before saying yes.

Maybe it's just Orlando restaurants. I was in Orlando two weeks ago and ate twice at a Thai restaurant (Ayothaya on W. Sand Lake Rd). First night I asked for the meal to be hot but not Thai hot. I couldn't detect any spicy heat at all and bumped it up with some chile paste that was brought to the table. I went back the next evening and was served by the same waitress. She remembered me and, again, I asked for the food to be hot. When the food came out I asked "now is this spicy"? She said she could tell by the color and that no, it wasn't hot. She took it back to the kitchen and it came back fairly spicy. It seems the restaurants are reluctant to make the food spicy. However, I'd go back to Ayothaya---the food was very good.

Nope, after seeing the Head Chef run for the kitchen I think they were fighting too hard not to bust out laughing to think about it and I didn't see the Chef again.

FREAKING HILARIOUS! I read a story on here a couple days ago and it was almost the same. Except it was just with one waitress.

Good one bro!! Yea my biggest complaint nowadays is when I ask for Thai Spicy I never get it. One waitress said they were mandated to make it mild because too many wimps were ordering Thai Spicy and sending it back cause it was too hot....Go Figure!

Thanx for the post..

If you ask for Thai Spicy and they don't bring it out, show them some bhut jolokia powder and tell them you mean business.

(That's actually worked for me recently. Haha.)
