pests Disease or pest?

Hi guys,
 
I was pruning my plants yesterday and found these black lumps on most of the plants just on the stem/trunk and branches. I had a look through the pests sticky and it kind of looked similar to scale but I wasn't sure. Can anyone please confirm what these are so I can look into fixing and preventing it?

Scrape those bastards off or hit em with a smothering soap/neem/oil spray. I usually scrape em off then spray as a preventetive.

Thats a big sucker!! Mine are usually much smaller.
