DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

I'm going to do my best to keep one of each alive, but with 77 total, I might be lucky if a few croak!

I've had a lot going on and have fallen behind on my glog and reading those of others on THP. I'm trying to catch up a little bit each day.

Two quarts is alot just to make for a salsa competition... Well maybe not with all the taste testing.... I would have it labeled Docs flaming hot salsa...
Yeah, I decided not to participate. One quart would be doable.
Good thing I'm eating right now! Nice looking salsa!
Thanks!
Whoa Doc I fall behind for a few days and I come back to see your mind blowing poddage, green salsa and clone magic! Not much I can say that others haven’t already said … Very impressive and Hat’s off mon \o_
Thanks, Ramon! I've fallen behind myself and trying to get caught up a bit every day.
Now that's what I'm thinking about "Salsa Verde"
:D
Do you think it's a cross? Sometimes the first couple pods can look a little odd...
It could be. Alternatively, it could just be one of the early funk pods. The ones coming in now are looking a little more true.
Very nice looking salsa verde, Doc!

As for the blurry shot, we call it Benji Highland dancing! [background=rgb(255, 244, 228)] [/background]
Hahaha!
Either that or Doc was self medicating again ;) (note da wink mon, hehe)
Another Hahaha!
Pod porn and drool action... I like this glog. Amazing plant action there Doc! Sorry about the Brain... does not look correct. Man, I hate it when that happens! Whatever it is though... it looks hot!
Thanks, Lourens. It's the first pod, and many of the first ones of other varieties have looked funky. Case in point is my Dorset Naga. The newer pods on the Yellow Brain are starting to look more correct.
If that yel brain still turn yellow, i bet it will still be killer!
They have such a good taste. At the least it should have some heat if it is a cross! Hoping it's just an early mis-shaper!
I have a few small buds forming on my overwintered one. Yay!
Awesome on the OW Yellow Brain! Even if this one is not true, I have a Yellow TSMB that is starting to pod up and looking pretty true.
Well ive got a yellow brain going to, so i do hope it grows true...
Good luck!

Damn Doc! Haven't checked in for a while but I'm amazed. You got it down man! Them were some beefy looking bells. I love bell peppers so keep me posted on those plants! Just imagine how many pods your gonna be harvesting this year. Its not even summer yet bro!

Good work Doc Brent. Maybe you can Rx me some pods this summer already ;). Nice bells I have Em too. Orange. Red. Yellow and chocolate. Love cloning. I use my aero to clone. Easy as heck. Clean cut. Get. Provide moisture voila. !!! Ya. Where is the clone Mayer PaulG?!

Me too! I haven't had anytime for glogs. Just went through the last 4 pages or yours and everything is looking good! Nice work on the clones.
Thanks, MM! I appreciate the time you took to peruse. There are so many great people here with great glogs that there just isn't enough time in the day. The clones I think are really starting to root in their respective grow bags as I've seen a big spurt of growth over the past couple of weeks.

Thanks, Jamison! They seem to be on cruise-control for the most part, knock on wood. I am starting to get the first wave of ripening, so I'll try to post up some pics this weekend. Just harvested three chocolate bells last night. I'm hoping the pods that ripen in the summer are blistering! Killer powder material.

Thanks, King! Once I get a large collection of pods I'm sure some will find their way to some THP friends. Nice selection of bells you have. I'm growing Red, Yellow, Purple, and Chocolate. My clone take was about 50:50, but I'm so glad I did some of them as the parent plants of a couple of them didn't survive the winter...but they live on via clones. I saw Paul had posted a few days ago, but yeah, he has been MIA for the most part. I can understand it. I was happy to see that he is well, though.

This coming weekend I am off and my wife is working. I have eight 2 cu ft bags of potting mix. There are 20+ more plants that are ready for bigger pants. Hmmmm...I wonder what I will do this coming weekend. ;)

Hope everyone is having a great week. I'm catching up on the glogs a few a day. Busy work week. House hunting has been difficult as the for sale inventory is quite low. The inventory is down to 40% of what it was last year. We found one place with fantastic curb appeal in a great neighborhood, only to find out the sellers have very unusual taste, which they expressed via flooring, painting, and various add ins. It would cost over 10% of the asking price just to remodel. Then we found another we really like inside and out, but it's a short sale. Didn't really want to go that route, but we might have to. Anyway, keep on keepin' on!

Short sales are really a PIA...but you can find some really great deals. Hope to see some pics soon, but I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to busy.

I'm gathering that. I've done a lot of research on the process. Fortunately, our realtor seems to know what she's doing, so that's very helpful. The inventory is awful here. So far, this short sale is the only thing we've found that we like, has all of our criteria, and is in our price range. So, we shall see.

So, I did snap a few pics today.

Very nice, plants are podding up without a hitch.

Be afraid,... of the Dorset Naga also. Strange things have left Bangladesh via the U.K............besides the "Naga Morich"
you have the music that George Harrison brought back home........................ :scared:

Keep up the great photos !
