I've used mesquite as well as hickory in my smoker but still prefer green apple wood for flavor and as an aid to control the heat from the fire. This year I'm going to put an assortment of peppers in the smoker for a more balanced flavor.
My favorite wood combo lately is cherry and hickory. Great for peppers and perfect for pork. Mesquite can be a little harsh and greasy but I still like it too, but much less is needed.
never been greasy for me, i'm from california, so mesquite is pretty popular here, and i don't really prefer fruit woods. although i am a little twords cherry. when i think of smoked. it's mesquite. i'm thinking of finding some pecan wood though.
