Frosty's Glog 2012

Well I decided to do a glog half way through. At first I didn't think anyone could learn anything. I guess there is value in what not to do.

I start seeds poking holes into styrofoam cups. I stuff promix into the cups and soak the promix then one layer of vermiculite spray with hydrogen peroxide place the seed on the vermiculite add a layer of vermiculite and spray again. I cover the top with ziploc snack bags and place on heating pads. I check periodically and spray with water or peroxide.

I use this method because it is simple and requires very little maintenance. Once they sprout they go under grow lights. I do a mix of LED and CFL.
I over winter most plants. Currently the over winters are in the ground or buckets and are:
Cherry peppers
'Hole Mole' pasilla
Jalepenos
manzanos
aji crystal
Mariachi hybrid

Here are seeds I have not yet planted it out.

These are:
Loofah (non pepper)
goats weed
fatali
manzano clone (in the big pot. I just did that to be silly)
orange habanero
Bhut carbon
Butch T
cap chacoense
cap praeternissium
cayenne

And another picture.

I got back from a trip to china with three different pepper seeds I collected. I didn't think they would start but I tried anyway. Almost got 100% germination. Go figure. I am a big fan of sip buckets (AKA global buckets). I mix peat, perlite, and coco pith in about equal proportions. Then I will add some ocean forest. Finally. I add three X treme gardening feeder packs to each bucket. Pith is absolutely needed. It will consistently wick water. I get buckets from craig's list.

The sip buckets are really low maintenance. I water them very rarely. The problem is they get hot. I think that is true for all buckets though.

This plant was grown indoors with a flood and drain table. It was too crowded and once I took it out it could not support itself so I had to cut it down. It is growing back nicely though

A different Chinese plant. you will see I am already having bug problems
IMG_0838.jpg

Here is my one and only Manzano pepper. the plant is probably ~10 months old. I had some sort of deficiency and sprayed with calmag and surrounded with compost. Everything looks better now.
IMG_0837.jpg

Here is my other manzano plant. On the left is the manzano that I took out of a sip bucket. In the center is a loofah and on the right is a chinese pepper. My hope is the loofah will help keep it cool in the morning and the chinese pepper will provide shade in the afternoon.

This is another chinese plant that I grew under lights and have moved to a southern window. Doing alright. Have to water it daily. I might put it in the ground. It is up to the wifey.

I am trying my hand at outdoor hydro. I am trying drip, DWC, and flood and drain using one reservoir. For the drip I took window planters but a drain and filled with a scotch pad. This did not work and had to clean it up. I used a big scotch pad and dumped a bunch of hydroton on top. it seems to be working. The drain I used leaked so I used a butt-load of silicone for aquariums. The plan is to put rockwool and suretogrow cubes on .5 coco and .5 perlite and drip irrigation. This has truly been a test and tweak process. I am tempted to throw it out.

IMG_0817.jpg

For the rest I have a flood and drain table I will just use felt pots and the over flow will go into the DWC. I made the height of the water adjustable in the dwc (I'll show that later). When the DWC gets too high it flows back into my reservoir. So it is recirculating in a sense.

I think I have all the bugs worked out. I will try to get the plants outdoors this week.

I read a couple articles about making those buckets...still thinking about trying one. Maybe next season...I really enjoy watching all your crazy setups. I have all the stuff I need laying around to make a small hydro unit...just been too lazy to put one together. As far as the "verbose" thing goes, I don't mind as long as what folks are writing is worth reading. Your is buddy, so let those words fly!

I added stakes to the manzano

How are you liking those buckets?

My grandfather made a few... My grandmother tried to grow tomatoes in them one year, and ended up with leaf miners, and no tomatoes.

I don't remember either of them trying again.

Damn...I passed on some chaco seeds because my grow was already full. Wish I had taken him up on it now! Looking great! How much sun to those between the walls get? I know its a tightrope in Az...I have spent a bunch of time there, and used to live in El Paso so I know how to stretch some cheese cloth to make things work.

The walls keep it warmer in the winter due to thermal mass, kitchen hood vent, and dryer vent. They also seem to be a little cooler in the summer due to white walls, thermal mass and intermittent shade. I have 4 gardens at different locations around the house, and the one between the walls does the best. Even better than the garden with shade cloth. They look pretty rough in august at 4 pm but by 7 they are perked back up. The wall runs East to West.

This guy is over three feet tall

This is one of my pasillas it never looks good and I get some BER but I like the peppers so I keep them around.

Here is a manzano branch loaded with 5 peppers. Thus far I have 15 I didn't expect much so I am happy. I have noticed the more sun the uglier the leaves

Plants look happy. Love the hydro and like Shane maybe one day I will step up with the big boys.

Thanks for sharing!

I have some hydro units I want to try out. I need to figure a way to run them outside. Phoenix gets a tad less rain than us........ Haha

Disaster has struck
wind blew over my plants. Everything is a mess.

One plant broke at the stem and I pulled it out
The roots were shiny white. I took this picture an hour later (after cleaning up the mess):

The roots seemed to grow straight down through stg:

I planted the stub in the ground but as the roots set out for a while and it is broken I don't have high hopes.

Damn...tragedy is striking on every glog I read tonight! I hope your plants are ok man. I am going to quit reading glogs for tonight.

thanks stc
I had one casualty. Such is peppers

In my flood and drain the peppers were getting too big and one had to go. I planted the butch t in the ground and now it is just the Fatali and Manzano.

Here is the drip system. You will see one missing plant. RIP

The Chaco

My hydro plants are 2-3 times (easily) larger and healthier than any of the plants I started at the same time. I didn't realize the difference until I pulled the Butch T down and compared it. Amazing! If I were to stop now and plant everything I would be well ahead of the game.

The hydro manzano has had a bunch of flowers but I haven't seen anything set. The thing is becoming a monster.

One plant is not too bad...I had pictures of a pile of dead ones and a stack of busted up equipment in mind. Glad to hear it, everything is looking incredible! Note to self...get smart on hydro for next season!

Yeah, I thought it was bad; the felt pots fell over and spilled coco coir and perlite. The pepppers where bent over but not broken. Stuff was clogged but I got it unclogged and the plants for the most part straightened themselves out or are not that far side ways.

Anyway I thought it was worse than it was.

This is my Aji Crystal

about 4' seems to be liking the heat.
Here is the hydro. I didn't feel like getting on the patio roof.

That is it for now

Hey, Frosty! Really enjoyed reading your log. Am intrigued by the
sip buckets. I assume there are no drain holes. Is there a layer of
gravel in the bottom? How much water do you put down the tube
at one time? Is there an ideal size for the sip tube? Sorry about all
the questions, but somehow this is the first I have heard of them!

Nice recovery from the wind storm - your plants look great!
Have a good week, Frosty.

Well Frosty, your glog pushed me into it... I finally broke down and built a DIY Hydro system. Just one plant, we'll see how it goes :D

I'm at work running code. When I get a chance I'll send pictures. I'll try to explain with words.

One bucket is inside another. The inner bucket has all the medium and drain/air holes(~.5"). It also has a big hole filled with a cracked plastic cup filled with coconut coir. The outer bucket has 1/8 inch holes right where the bottom of the inner bucket is. So when I fill up the bottom bucket the water starts coming out of the holes. theplastic cup sits in the water and wicks it up to the medium. The medium has a certain capacity of water it can "suck up". So if you get the medium right you get the perfect mixture of air and water.. more or less.

I must warn you everyone told me I needed to cool the water or I would have problems. I just had to find out myself. Which hydro system are you doing?

Its all in my glog, I don't know the proper name... But its basically a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in the lid, a basket, an airstone, and a pump.

So you are saying you ended up having problems?

So far I've heard nothing about cooling it, it has shade from about 11-2, and in the evening.
