Some letter combination are very difficult for monolingual Spanish speakers. You may have heard that Latinos have problems with correctly pronouncing English words beginning with st or sp: they won't say spy but rather espy, not stay buy estay. They need to add a vowel to make it pronounceable. The same for kn: k is dropped to make it easy for the tongue.
