Getting a GPS

I like the TomTom units, I got my wife the XL model.

A quick search on the net brings up heaps of extras for them. Voices POI's etc.

i bought the cheapest i could get $99 before i left on the big tour in January. It worked brilliantly giving short cuts through all the small towns from here to Dubbo on the 900 kms of first day - but then it crapped out & found out nearest store was on the way home again. Spewin because I only really got it to get me through Sydney (spit)

Anyway when i took it back was able to pay a little more (another 80) & get a Uniden. Its the bees knees. If your going above $200 mark, make sure you're able to update the maps every year for a while and if its going to crap out on you it'll do it within a week of using it solid so dont get the extra warranty option - these things are going to be as low as $50 next year so don't go blowing the budget.

apart from all that, never leave it in sight in the car while you're not there, cracking the window & ripping it out of the holder is common fodder for junkies

good luck & have fun ;)

Thanks Bent....All good points.

I mainly want it for driving around sydney as well.....and also for the Motor bike as I'm planning some long distance trips over the next few months...:)

I've driven through sydney a few times and I HATE it....the only thing that saved me a little was that My dirt bag ex knew sydney really well....

well i'm a criminal in Sydney because I followed the map to the tunnel & wound up on the recently toll-less harbour bridge. Having done Gallipoli bridge 5 times already, it was a good option

No right turns are a laugh too

The first time I ever drove in Sydney about 10 years ago I ended up going the wrong way down HAY street which at the time was mostly a one way street, and to add a little stress to it all I turned to early and ended up on the tram line.....So here I am going the whole way down the tram line in Hay street with people looking at me like I was from Mars....

By the time I got to the Hotel I was white knuckled very stressed and in need of a very strong drink......The girl I had with me strangly went very silent when I threatened to drive over some random guy that pointed and laughed at me when i ended up on the tram line........I think when he saw the whites of my eyes and the look on my face, he realised i wasn't planning on stopping in a hurry when I started to speed up in his direction........

Salute',TB.

"Unknown destination"

Never tried a Tomtom But hear good things about them if you want simplicity.

I myself use a Garmin 760.. Expensive as hell when i bought it but has never done me wrong & has all the features I wanted.

I was gonna say how about saving your money and just learn how to read a map. Maybe getting a good sense of direction also(it's a wonderful upgrade to the map reading part - they tend to go hand in hand nicely).

+1! People have driven around for thousands of years without the need of a GPS. All they had was a nagging wife to tell them they were lost and a baby dinosaur in the back seat that occasionally needed to be let out to use a public rest room.

you are all a bunch of comedians......My sides are splitting your all so funny......No wait....I'm laughing at you not with you.....
