GIF

How do I upload a ".gif" file? I tried saving it to my FaceBook account, but that (somehow) prevented the gif from animating; therefore it was an exercise in futility. I also tried to copy the file directly into a post on this site, but that didn't work either. There must be something I'm missing...??? Anyone?

You may not be necessarily missing anything. I don't know if it's this site or something else, but sometimes GIF's work here and sometimes they don't. I've heard lots of people here say that from time to time, so I don't think it's our computers. Even the emoticons - a few of them are animated, such as : dance : ->, but from time to time they won't animate. Go ahead and use the .GIF, but know that sometimes we'll see the animation and other times we won't.

Just host them on a decent site, I use imgur.com

I use Photobucket to upload them to and then use the Direct Link to copy the URL for posting here and paste into the post using the Add image icon on the toolbar and they work fine :

How did you create and save the GIF -- ie. did you optimize it to decrease the filesize (there may be a filesize limitation if it is a large image and lots of frames.)

It's only 88.2KB, so size shouldn't be an issue. I took another look at FaceBook & it didn't upload properly there, so that's part of the problem. I'm hesitant to create yet another account (like Photobucket) only because last time I did that, I paid for a "lifetime" membership, which lasted about 5-7 years & then the place disappeared. Fortunately, I didn't lose any of my photos, just the site where I stashed them for use on various forums. The "image" option here will only accept a URL, so retrieving it direct from my PC isn't an option - believe it or not, this is the 1st forum I've used where I've had issues not being able to pull directly from my PC.

OK - I uploaded it to an old forum I still belong to (but haven't been to in years) & that site allowed me to upload direct from my PC. Then when I pasted the link in this post, it will send you there, but you need to click on the image within the post to make it work. So, that's a partial fix.

Just tried a copy & paste & the image works correctly prior to trying to submit (which it will not let me do) - I also get this error message: "...You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community..." So, there's something amiss here...

Bottom line is that the answer is 40 & the .gif demonstrates that.

Photobucket is free and they do not delete the pics after a certain amount of time like many free sites do so is the one I use (have had a free account there for about 3 years and never had problems with it.

If you really do not want to setup a new account then another option would be the Paid account here --- the paid members are given more options and IIRC are able to directly upload pics from their system to an album here so you could then use it to upload the gif and link directly to it from this sites storage.

You can use Gallery or attachments to posts here as Extreme member, or just link to it.
