Hello everyone! What a great forum this is. I've noticed that there are several other South Africans in this community, but I haven't seen anyone from Port Elizabeth yet, so I thought it was about time to represent the Eastern Cape!
I haven't grown chillies in fifteen years, but last year my sister and I started selling Mexican food at a local farmer's market. I was getting fed up by the lack of good chillies on the market and also the high prices. I ordered and planted some seeds in October 2013. To be honest, most people fear the burn, so for the most part our food is mild, but we like to serve freshly chopped chillies on the side for customers to add to their dishes. I want to include a superhot variety at our stall as a bit of an attraction; you know how guys get when there's beer and women around.
When I was making my seed selection, I kept reading tips to keep the first grow small, because it can quickly get out of hand. I followed that advice and I regret it now. I have the time and the space to accommodate many more plants, but I didn't want to be knee-deep in chillies when it was time to harvest. Next time, I'll be sure to throw caution to the wind.
