Greetings from PE, South Africa

Hello everyone! What a great forum this is. I've noticed that there are several other South Africans in this community, but I haven't seen anyone from Port Elizabeth yet, so I thought it was about time to represent the Eastern Cape!

I haven't grown chillies in fifteen years, but last year my sister and I started selling Mexican food at a local farmer's market. I was getting fed up by the lack of good chillies on the market and also the high prices. I ordered and planted some seeds in October 2013. To be honest, most people fear the burn, so for the most part our food is mild, but we like to serve freshly chopped chillies on the side for customers to add to their dishes. I want to include a superhot variety at our stall as a bit of an attraction; you know how guys get when there's beer and women around. :P

When I was making my seed selection, I kept reading tips to keep the first grow small, because it can quickly get out of hand. I followed that advice and I regret it now. I have the time and the space to accommodate many more plants, but I didn't want to be knee-deep in chillies when it was time to harvest. Next time, I'll be sure to throw caution to the wind.

Currently growing:

  • 2 x Jalapeño (fruiting)
  • 2 x Trinidad Moruga Scorpion
  • 1 x Peruvian White Lightning Habanero (flower buds)
  • 3 x Rajah (F1 hybrid) (fruiting)
  • 3 x Orange Habanero (fruiting)
Here's a baby orange hab on one of my plants:

Hi there
Welcome from the North West
This is the best site out there!!!
Always a good thing to plant your own peppers (I had difficulty finding Chilli peppers for my sauces and chutney's)
so decided to plant my own.

Hi Van, thanks for the welcome. I was at Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa near Rustenburg this past December. It was beautiful up there. Maybe I'll come beg you for a bottle of chilli chutney next time I'm up there!

Thanks everyone! I know very little about Denmark and Romania, but you guys must be alright if you grow chillies over there. :surprised:

Hey Prazzie!  Greetings from Cape Town!
Hi RobStar, whereabouts in Cape Town? I lived there for 6 years, studied there. Never grew anything, Cape Town flats are tiny. All I could fit on my balcony was a braai.

Thanks again for making me feel welcome everyone. The vibe on this forum is great.

:welcome:  From Mtn. Grove, Missouri USA, Glad to see you here when it comes to anything Spicy or just down right hot, this is the place to be at. Starting small is ok at times, if you have not gardened before, You can be surprised just how many pods you can get off a few plants especially if your growing Nagas and Bhuts.  Your Trinidad Moruga will make up for the lack of plants with its extreme heat, for a laugh check out the people eating Moruga's on YouTube.   Also Nigel and other people here do reviews of many of the peppers that people grow.
If you have any questions about growing, types of Hot peppers, making sauces or just anything hot feel free to ask,  there is a lot of very nice people here that  can answer just about any question and remember we all like to see your photo's of what your growing, we even have a section of the glogs devoted to growing other plants than peppers that you can look at.

Greetings from Defcon HQ... We actually have customers in Fourways!
Hi DEFCON Creator. If they're ordering hot sauce all the way from the US, it must be something special. I hope to try it one day!

Welcome and good luck. When you get up to your knees in chiles. Grind it to powder then you will only be up to your ankles.
Haha! Good advice!

In the Deep South! Up on the mountain-side about 4k's from Kommetjie - quite rural still with the Table Mountain National Park's boundary about 120m behind my house.  Great conditions for growing chili!

Whereabouts in P.E. are you?  I sorta know it - I managed a project in Coega and stayed in Amsterdamhoek for the duration.
