Greetings from The Cold!

Hey There,

I am new to pepper growing and am doing my first batch. I surely love it, and it is very addictive. I started this new adventure to easy my mind off Ph.D. studies, sort of a mental and cognitive cool-down.

I am in Saskatchewan Canada, today was pretty cold, -36C. We have had a real deep freeze here the last 6 weeks, and this weekend we will be hitting the -48-ies C.

What am I growing right now?
- 4 Trinidad Scorpion
- 3 Scarlet Lantern Peru
- 1 Yesil Tatli
- 3 Super Datil
- 2 Piri Piri
- 1 Ricoto Costa Rica
- 3 Ricoto 217
- 2 Hinkelhartz
- 3 Costco Sweet Peppers (I took the seeds out of a Costco pepper and planted them)

I am planning to resurrect from seed some Beaver Dam and *my favourite) Madam Jeannette.

I set up a grow tent with T5HO (20,000 lumens), a misting humidifier, on 24/7 light. I will be switching to 18/6 next week though.

I think I'll be browsing for a while, although I have one question.

== One of the Costo Peppers started to produce buds. The plant is only 5 inches tall. Should I remove those buds and have it veg a bit more?

Thanks!!

Welcome to THP from Canada BC. Yes pinch those flowers off and let it veg for longer or all you are gonna have is a few peppers at best with a 5 inch plant. IMO you are gonna have problems getting a harvest under those T5's i find those are great for starting seeds and what not but you might wanna look into HID lighting.

:welcome: from Nova Scotia... And I agree with Hophead - getting a harvest under fluorescent's is tough. Though, I'm sure a T5 is better than the T8's I was making do with until I got my HPS in. My Cayenne's managed to produce some, but the Chinense-types don't seem to stand much chance with the low lumens.

Thanks for your replies! A HPS system including ventilation etc. is not going to fit in my budget at this time, the best I can do is get around 30,000 Lumens in total with my additional T5 HO panel, and some extra side CFL bulbs in 42w (2600 Lumens each). I am running all 6500K at this time, and have enough 2700K bulbs here for the flowering phase.

I would start to look at least 400W sometimes hydroponic stores if you have one close by has used gear for sale.

Thanks for your reply. I live quite isolated and need to order everything through Amazon. Would they have something that is good to consider?

I went with Hydroshop.ca for my 1000w. My light kit works great, so far (had it for a couple months now, I think?), and I got precisely what I ordered. Only found a couple catches with them:

1) When I placed my order, and paid through PayPal, their website indicated my order was "Pending". I had to contact their email support to get an update and clear idea of when it would be fulfilled and shipped.
2) You need to be careful of the fine print regarding shipping. Heavier/larger orders incur extra fees. I don't believe I would have been informed of the extra fees had I not been in touch with the email support.

I went with them since they're Canadian and didn't appear to have rather expensive shipping costs. I'm sure others could recommend some fine options :)

I am familiar with them and have the same experience. I am waiting for my order as it is still processing.

Looking at all the cost, I think I will have to stick with my 20,000 Lumens + 10,000 additional lumens option. My plan is to keep only the healthiest plants of each of the above species. I am not looking for truck loads of produce, as this is a hobby to keep me going and to get my mind of studying. I read elsewhere in this forum that around 3000 Lumens per square foot is recommended, which would work in my 2x4 tent.

Welcome!!!  And Ph.D. studies in what art if you dont mind?

Education, focusing on what influences an educator's decision to stay or leave their profession n isolated schools, and how that decision impacts student achievement.

Ahhhhh so you are studying to be one of those folks who come in to observe and evaluate the effectiveness of my dad's teaching

But the good news is... the last time one of those professional eduacator specialists came in they were amazed by his strategies.

No, on the contrary... My research focuses on what your dad does differently in his mind to keep focused and dedicated to doing the best for his students, and how other teachers in isolated schools can learn to adopt that same flexible mindset  :onfire:

Welcome to THP.
Those T5 Ho's are not all that bad but they run cool.  Let me ask you this, what soil temps are your Peps at now?  Higher ( in the 80-90 degree range) will help in the Vegetative stage. Just remember to water and feed em so they wont dry out! Grow em big than fruit em out!

I have them on a heating pad, and the soil is around 80 degree F range indeed. I also run a humidifier with warm mist, bringing the temp to around 80F as well.

I just ordered a 400W HPS/MH combo which I can hook up to the air exchanger to suck out the heat. The MH bulb initially has 36,000 lumens, and the HPS bulb has 55,000 lumens. For flowering, that makes a big difference.
