Growing Berries from seed

I usually start my grow season with a challenge to myself to grow something that I have never grown before.  This season I feel as though I may be defeated.  I bought some Loganberry and Black Raspberry seeds from tradewinds and I am having a hell of a time getting them to germinate.  Any of you out there ever attempted blackberries/rasberries from seed.  I have thrown out my first attempt and will be starting again soon but am starting to question my methods for getting these things to start. My plan will be to container grow them indoors year round and plant out next spring 2015.

Must be out of the loganberry as I dont see it anymore here is the description

--A delicious berry and a hybrid of the common blackberry and the raspberry. The fruits look a bit like blackberries, but with deep red colored skin. They have a wonderful sour-sweet flavor that lends well both to fresh eating as well as to beverages and desserts. Commonly cultivated by cuttings, the loganberry can be grown from seed as well, though the possibility exists for traits of its hybrid parents to occur in seedlings.

I took the advise from tradewinds to perform stratification by placing seeds on damp paper towel or vermiculite and put in fridge a few weeks before sowing seeds. I placed them in a damp paper towel and put in ziploc and kept in fridge for about a month before I sowed seeds in the dirt.  I kept the seeds warm by placing them on top of my fridge, I gave them over a month to germ still nothing.

From my researching there seems to be some controversy on how to start blackberries/rasberries from seeds. All can agree that it is a difficult process and most suggest using cuttings to start new plant.

Just wondering if anyone has any sucess stories to share, or suggestions?

I plan to pick a few berry plants up from home depot in the spring but thought it'd be nice to have a couple  "rare" varieties.

Thanks in advance

I tried last year with a Boysenberry plant from a mother plant. My 3 dogs chewed it up. It is very thorny, worse than roses. I think they wanted toothpicks. I will try some more cuttings this year again. Boysenberries are related to both black berry Logan berry, and raspberry. They are more common here in Southern California due to Knott's Berry Farm theme park...

I want to try from seed. It's on my bucket list.

Even though i had no success with berries ,
One thing i would suggest anyone is that , they should buy the seedlings .
You live in the US so you can leave them outside for stratification , it might not always be successful .
If you buy seeds from reputable sellers , you can experiment.
I still suggest people to buy seedlings , then they could propagate them with the seeds they get this season.

I have heard that berry seeds need too be put through a freeze so you should try putting them in the freezer for a couple weeks before attempting to germinate

Freeze if berries collected fresh, and many need to simulate passing through an animals gut (acid bath) to sprout.

Quickest method uses drain cleaner, though slower, less drastic methods exist also.

Blackberries are one of those that need treatment.

thanks to all for your input,

I think what Im gonna do is put a few in the freezer and try again. Also place a couple outside and see what happens.

i have never had luck with berry seeds: blackberry, raspberry, strawberry nor blueberry. i put mine in the freezer for a month, the blueberries 3 months. i have had luck with goji berry from seed.
i have established raspberry and strawberry stock but for whatever reason my purchased blueberry plants have never produced berries.

good luck.

Never heard of this. So basically it needs those extra chemicals to germinate , or those chemicals are softening the shells or something like that?
