Growing peppers in the north! Hydro all day everyday.

It's very interesting to follow your progress, Mild.
Been wanting to try hydro grows for a while, but with no personal knowledge of the process, it's difficult for me to know where to start.
Kratky seems like a "safe" route for beginners, especially here in Denmark where we have those systems in greenhouses already.

Anywho - I noticed that you, and a few others have troubles with BOC and BMJ.
I can report that I too have problems growing them (mine are growing in soil).
Too much direct light and leafs die off fast.
All my plants were put outside for a few hours to harden them off in the sunlight and wind.
BOC and BMJ took a massive hit that day.
They were stunted for a few weeks until today really, where they are finally bouncing back and putting out flowers again. They aint pretty atm.. But with a little patience they just might make it.

Now the actual taste test: The smell is incredible, very very fruity. I can faintly detect the ghost smell. Not floral at all. Like an orange mixed with lemon.
My tolerance for superhots are very low, this early in the season, so I cut a small piece of the tip. 1cm properly.
First a fruity almost sweet, kinda like a honeydew melon. Then within the first second an OVERWELMING HEAT! Im not joking, this made my eyes and nose run and destroyed my mouth. Mostly tongue and not the throat, which I guess is preferable for me. This will make an excellent hot sauce!

The next two pictures are of my Amarillo, notice the thickness of the stem here;

Vs the top, I don't know if you can notice it, but the stem at the bottom is thinner than the top. However the plant is starting to set flowers and seem overall very healthy (the leaves are a bit droopy, as the day here is almost over). I read something about damping off, but could that be the case here? I thought only small plants could be the victim of this?

To me, and in my summer climate here, they grow almost more
like vines. Stems just like the ones in your picture.

Thanks man! Kratky is diffidently a safe route to begin with. I've never tried it with peppers, but it works wonders for herbs

Otherwise I'll recommend khangstarrs youtube for easy beginner videos for hydro, without getting overwhelmed, that's how I started out

So after having isolated myself for a month for my last exam, I can now say im a medical doctor yay!
But to the more interesting stuff!

The photo dont do it justice, this biquinho, is full of pods!

Biquinho, pasilla and fireflame. I eat these peppers almost daily, so good.

Heres the biggest pod so far on the murupi, really looking forward to tasting it.

Since last update, I also bought a botanium which is a overpriced ebb and flood system packed in a design most wives would accept (this makes the price acceptable). In this im starting fish pepper seeds, so I'll include this in future updates. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!

i haven't tried making canned / syrup but they do it! see

Alright, I'll go check it out

Something other than doublecup/bucket methods?
Been looking at ferts on a danish hydro site - is General Hydroponics fertilizer the way to go? Or should I look for something else? Not jumping in to hydro just yet, gonna wait and see until fall

The BOC is growing quite a lot lately but it still hasnt produced a single fruit yet.
BMJ is also growing a lot. It has 1 fruit, and that is actually a cross pollinated one XD nevertheless I look forward to see it ripe sometime

Both are putting out flowers too.
I'm repotting the BOC plant to a cloth pot soon.. Might post a picture of the plants then

Here's my BMJ and BOC in cloth pots.
At least they are going places now

BMJ was repotted last week and the BOC was done today.
Still only 1 fruit on BMJ which was crossed with Carbonero. Just fooling around to see if anything happens.. For now.. Hehe..

Yea, its great to have pepper just for snacking! I've looked up a recipe to pickle them, which I consider doing if I can't keep up eating them as they come

Khangstarr do a lot of the double cup method, otherwise checkout chili chump on youtube he does some pretty inexpensive hydro setup with items from Ikea and such. I've been using the flora series from general hydroponics a lot, recently changed to masterblend tho. I think IKEA also have a hydro fertilizer if one wants to experience hydro without draining the bank

Haha, I actually think they benefited from my neglect

I had my watering system up and running and I didn't prune them or cleaned the tent in almost a month

Minimal attention could be the way to go?

Plants seem to have enjoyed their staycation while you were occupied, that's a lot of pods being produced! Are you planning on moving any plants outside this season?

Regarding the hydro, I'm very impressed with the Plagron A&B Hydro nutes - very cheap but my plant in the tent is soon outgrowing it, and the plants in my office have reached the ceiling and are thus nearly 2 metres tall! :dance:

Everything is fruiting nicely too, so it seems to support all growth phases

Keep up the good work, and the eating of all that produce!

Yeah, he's really started a trend with those. And so many people has given positive feedback after testing it for themselves!
Yesterday I noticed a video of his about hydro nutrients vs other water soluble nutrients, which has really encouraged me to have a swing at it with Hornum fertilizer - since I already use it.
Seemingly there's little difference in small double cup systems.. So, why not?

might be able to put up seeds for germination during the weekend.
Gonna check out Chili chump too!
Ikea has some pretty solid stuff here in Scandinavia I must say. The Växxer germination system with 50 slots work wonders for me.

I have no problems sharing seeds from my attempted cross with others

But of course I need a few of them first 8-)

Thanks man! Unfortunately I dont have access to a garden, so all plants stay inside all year. Damn sounds impressive, I have to constantly prune mine, to keep them growing to tall into the light

I've never tried that product, but cheap and effective are two great qualities in any nutrient

Do report back if you have any success with the Hornum fertilizer used as hydro, I know my parents use the stuff and it really gets the job done!
Hopefully I have some crossed seeds later this year as well, fingers crossed!

Quick update*

My fish pepper have germinated! What you are looking at is small hydroton, in a self watering vase. I only have to refill water every 4-6 weeks.

Finally got the time for another update.

Things are moving these days in my tent. Old plants go out, and new come in. I've been battling a pest infestation with all kinds of eco friendly products. None worked unfortunately, so I had to buy the strong stuff witch properly makes me sterile or something. However it worked!

So the plants that survived the infestation are as follows:

Looking good, Rasmus! I really like your use of the Grodan blocks.
Makes such a tidy and clean grow space. I suspect that the lower
blocks get filled with roots?

The little germination unit is awesome - looks like the cooling tower
of a nuclear plant. Are you sure there is not some kind of mutagenic
radiation coming from it? I'm thinking it's a new growing strategy for
northern EU folks :lol:

Thanks! They work very well for me, my GF thinks they look hideous, and while I kinda agree that they are not particularly beautiful - they get the job done!

Yes the roots grow into the lower blocks and when filled, they stop growing in hight which often fits with my grow tent.
Haha I wish! Unfortunately nuclear plants are something my country are still very much afraid of, so no mutagenetic radiation in my growing space

However, my feeding tubes are beginning to emit something green, which I suspect is a more boring topic as algae. Unfortunately I don't have my black feeding tubes anymore, so I'll have to monitor if it gets problematic in the future.

The sugar rush peach (old seeds from whitehotpeppers) are the first to set pods! Lots of flowers also

But my Jalapeño Lemon spice have also set its first pod

! Beautiful plant

The Aji fantasy are beginning to set flowers, but look at these huge leaves :dance:

The experiment with growing parsley in the botanium seems to be a success

Great selection of plants there, they must be liking all the extra space as well! Loved the sugar rush Peach this year, and growing them indoors is smart as they take forever (seriously) to ripen. Curious to hear how you like the lemon spice, as I got seeds for next year as well!

Looking forward to the monsters you'll be growing in about a month or so, that will for sure help you through the dark winter months...
