Growing Pink Oyster mushrooms in a pickle jar! : O

I am not sure, but it's how the person who gave me the mycelium grows his, and with much success - as seen in above pics! I want to duplicate what he does so I can get the same results.

He even told me that if water collects at the bottom of the jar, that I could add a sheet of paper towel to absorb the water and that the fungus would eat that too!!!

I am sure there are a million different ways that one could grow these babies, but let's just see how it turns out for me...

: )

I used to help my mother grow mushrooms as a kid (well im still a kid just a 29 year old one) and it was lots of fun. All we did was buy a box-o-dirt with the spores already in there.

Thanks for sharing your mushy experience with us Hollyberry :)

You should keep it fun. I've grow mushooms before, got to big, burn out, had no fun. and a he he.. people like to tell you what mushrooms you should grow. In Canada theres a great number of wild ones you can eat. Some are great tasting but are to hard to grow by the cheap farming methed. You just can't buy them at the local store. If you do any walking think about it ?

I am afraid that I have completely failed, and in fact as we speak, the person is sending me another mycelium pellet so that I can start fresh.

The fungus stopped spreading and there were the weird white splotches and this is what was said...

Looks like somthing may have gone wrong.

In your "lid off" photo I see little spots of white growth that are not part of the inoculating site. Am I seeing right ?

If so, there may be a few explanations. When I saw it, it looked like quite a lot of filter and not much coffee. I wonder if it was a very small brew and had hot water running thru it for only a few minutes ?

I make twelve cup pots that have water running through for at least ten minutes. It is not important how much coffee or filter there is, just that it's thoroughly pasteurized.

Maybe run another pot, and start a new jar with some "rescued" mycelium.

You can keep the old one (in another cupboard) as the mycelium may possibly (or not ?) overcome the contamination, but you don't want spores landing in the new jar.

Good growing,

Of course I tried to salvage it but couldn't. I will be doing things a little differently next time. I'll keep you guys posted, not to worry.

Well, I am back in business! Hopefully...

Notice how there's a bit more coffee this round? Instead of a solid cube, the mycelium was sent to me in pieces this time, hence the reason for the three spots.

Looking good so far - will show more shots later.
