Bear with me - I'm sort of in charge of publicity for the fair and am the head cheerleader, the one throwing people on the bandwagon.
Alas, thanks to a rotary tiller that broke down and took lot longer to get fixed than it should have, followed by a back that left me immobile for a week (and three weeks behind in other work), I did not get as much stuff planted, or planted as early as I needed to, so that it would be ready to enter in the fair.
I do have a display of peppers, about 34 different types. I also entered red, white and blue potatoes (I had to enter the latter under Other Root Vegetable) and cucumbers. I will win a couple of Ribbons - there are only three entries for Best Display of Garden Products (my display included a seeder, seeds, a hoe, rake, hand tiller; seed trays and containers; ferts, nuits and insecticide; plant stakes and cages, Mosquito repellent; garden hose and nozzle; potting soil and dirt; a meter that checks pH, fertility, lighting and moisture and probably a couple of other things}. At worst, I should come in third.
The other one is Best Display of Food Preservation Products. I didn't see any other diplays for this but I included Bell Jars and lids (quarts and pints), pressure canner, Kosher salt, Vinegar, spices, a dehydrator, kitchen utensils, and more.
I didn't look around but I could win in the potato categories - no one has any large ones. I got luck and had volunteers turn up that were decent size.
In the cuke display, my hope is resting with the Yamato Long and Sikkim. No one has any near as long or as heavy as those two. But do they have some great looking zucchini!
Another thing that is catching on is - and you all should love this - hot peppers. None of mine are entered, I'm just doing the display. I'll post some pics, hopefully tomorrow evening. This one plant, that was entered as Other Banana, is amazing. I get to take pictures of the winners and hope to find out what type they are and if they have any heat. They look like Hot Wax but my plants have never produced that many pods at once or pods as big as these.
More news as it develops!
