Harry's 2012/2013

With Spring officially arriving I have kicked off the season a couple of seeds from a Red Rocoto pod that found its way to me. The seeds are currently soaking in distilled water after being dipped in H2O2 solution for a few minutes.

Many of the plants from previous season remain. The vast majority of the mature non C. Pubescens plants have not regrown thus far. As of Friday I have one Not Locato (plant #2) in bloom with the other (plant #1) developing buds. Today marks the first day an orange Rocoto plant in the garden has re-entered bloom.

Updated 03 Sep 2012: More Rocoto plants are active than I had first listed; Bonda Ma Jacques marks the first new C. Chinense.

Good to hear one of 'em has sprouted for you, harry!

I finally had a few pop today--including one of the Moruga Reds you sent me. Still no luck on the difficult ones I was telling you about though.

Pity the new sprouts will have an El Niño to contend with this season.

The mention of Moruga Red reminded me of that it is one of the plants I meant to add to the to the active overwintered plant list. The additions to the active overwintered plant list include:
  • Not Fluorescent Purple
  • Moruga Red
  • SB TFM plant #2
I didn't take the risk of pruning the SB TFM plant #2 while it was inactive as this was the one that produced stingers. SB TFM plant #4 that I pruned back to the main stem has more progress.

I carefully excavated the centre of the Canario pot to find a hook deeper than I had sowed the seed. I also checked on the white flowering C. Pubescens seed sowed on the same day (September 9) to find no signs of germination.

Yesterday I found the largest aphid infestation thus far of the season on the Caribbean Red plant.

I sighted the second Red Rocoto hook yesterday evening. The original Red Rocoto seeds that I treated with H2O2 solution are now 2/2 for sprouts.

The Aji Omnicolor plant is now in a 30 cm pot filled with reused Debco Seed Raising mix from the low yield Not White Bhut plant #2 and the virtually fruitless Beni Highlands plant #2. I need to sort out a nutrient deficiency that has resulted in the young leaves beginning yellow.

Lots of talk Harry but you know what they say....

no photos so it didn't happen ;)

seriously show a pic of the nute deficiency and I'm sure people will offer opinoins

I've already taken action to try and remedy the deficiency a week or two ago by adding some of a Manutec Trace Elements fertiliser and repotting it on Monday. It's been in the same 8 L pot and mix for well over a year now. Quarter strength Amgrow Nitrosol (NPK 10.5:2.3:6.8 plus 1.68% Calcium) has seemingly provided enough Nitrogen for the regrowth of other plants in depleted mixes.

First set of 9 hyperlinked photos of the season:

Row1: Aji Cristal (Immature plant), Aji Omnicolor (Regrowth yellow), Aji Omnicolor (Regrowth closeup)[/i]
Row2: Biquinho (Regrowth plus old growth), Not Locato #2 (1st Pod of Season), Not Locato #2 (Flower)
Row3: Rocoto, Red (2nd Sprout), Scotch Bonnet TFM plant #2 (Regrowth), Trinidad Scorpion plant #1 (Regrowth)

The highlight of the season is Not Locato No2. The plant is covered in flowers and tiny pods.

My in ground Rocoto experiment that I began last season continues:

Rocoto Orange No5 (Blooming)

This particular plant is not sheltered from the elements.

3 Limón hooks have reached the surface today 12 days after I sowed them.

I spoke too soon regarding the Canario as it had only just germinated last month. The hook has finally reached a lowered surface today 23 days after I sowed it.

I sowed
  • an additional Bonda Ma Jacques seed and Habanero White Mild seed last week (~Thu Sept 27);
  • a 7pot Yellow seed on Saturday (Sept 29);
  • an additional White flower C. Pubescens on Sunday (Sept 30); and
  • a Hot Lemon seed yesterday (Mon Oct 01).

I see what you mean about some of your plants needing a bit of a feed. Did the Manutec stuff do the trick? Some of my overwinters were looking very hungry a little while back themselves. Nothing some good old Dynamic Lifter and Triple Boost couldn't fix though.

Do you use dry ferts at all or just stick to the liquid stuff?

The Not Locato #2, does that produce long shaped pods? That is exactly how my Rocoto Aji Largo pods are looking ATM.

I use the manutec trace elements in my soil if I get some yellowing or wierd looking growth. Usually before thinking N or Mg deficiency. Does the trick a lot of the time.

The new growth on the Aji Omnicolor is greener than the previous yellow growth. It seems the Manutec Trace Elements are beginning to kick in. It's still too early to see how the SBTFM plant I'm feeding with Manutec Tomato Food (soluble fertiliser) compares to the other similar plant.

I tried to use some slow release fertiliser last season and suspect it in combination with liquid fertiliser was the cause of the leaf burn on a number of Rocoto plants. I haven't added granular fertiliser to the other pots this season. I'm still trying to get the plants to regrow using Amgrow Nitrosol. I suspect though I will need to repot the plants I decide to keep going to get substantial growth.

Not Locato #2 had shorter and fatter pods:

First pod on Not Locato #2

Not Locato #1 had the longer sometimes bottle-necked pods. Some of the young pods have signs of bottle-necking.

Looks like you are already well ahead of last season harry. Nice work

The Not Locato #2 bloomed earlier this season than last season though the rest of the plants are not as advanced. A plant grown from Not Locato #2 seed had its first two partially open flowers yesterday.

I pruned the Not Locato #1 to stop its reach for the sky yesterday. Three cuttings from this plant are now pending propagation.

Rounding up the C. Pubescens news I found the Canario hook didn't make it. I sowed another Canario seed yesterday after treating it with H[sub]2[/sub]O[sub]2[/sub].solution.

Biquinho plant now has the first open C. Chinese flower as of yesterday:

Not Fluorescent Purple plant #2 is the first C. Annuum to flower this season as of today:

7/7 of the Limón seeds from a disposed Limón plant have sprouted:

Updated to add late afternoon photos.

I've heard that you shouldn't leave pods to get dried and wrinkled on the plant because they send a message to the plant that the season is over and it's time to shut down and stop producing.

My third Red Rocoto sprout is visible as a hook 18 days after I sowed it.

I've heard that you shouldn't leave pods to get dried and wrinkled on the plant because they send a message to the plant that the season is over and it's time to shut down and stop producing.

I've read this too though it doesn't match what I have seen in practice for the most part. I removed 20 or so pods a few weeks ago to lessen the load on the Biquinho. This particular plant is in the best condition of all my C. Chinense varieties.

Yesterday I sowed the following seeds:
  • 1 Blondie
  • 2 Carmine
  • 1 Rocoto Aji Largo

6 Limón sprouts will probably survive though the one shown as a hook in a previous photo has become the second with a stuck seed cap. The middle decapitated sprout is toast.

A third Red Rocoto sprout is now upright after first revealing itself as a hook on Tuesday. 19 days from start to hook.

A Seven Pot plant made it through the winter and has been growing for some time now.

I sowed the following seeds yesterday:
  • 1 Fatalii
  • 1 Sukanya/White flowering

A fourth Red Rocoto hook is upright after first appearing as a hook on Saturday morning.

Hey harry, I was just about to msg you to ask how your plants are coming along.

When you say 3 years in the making, do you mean it's taken that long to obtain a true TS or something else like it's a 3 year old plant? Just curious as I know you've had a lot of bad luck with NOTs and I'm hoping you are finally starting to get what you originally planned to grow!

The pod is on a plant I started in 2010 that is now in its third season. Best I can say is it has produced blistering hot pods in the past. I haven't obtained a TS from another source.
