Hawaii and Korea

I have people going to Hawaii and Korea in a few days. Are there any rare peppers I should ask them to try and find?

I have a good friend who lives in Hawaii now. I am in the process of obtaining some seeds of this variety from him. It grows wild around there, and is used for a sauce they call "hot water" (I believe). It appears to be some form of birds eye that has just adapted through the decades there, and from what he tells me - these little things grow pretty much wild on the islands. From his description, they are pretty hot... Habenero or slightly hotter according to the source ;)

He also says everyone just refers to them as "Hawaiian chillis/peppers"...

I wou;d be interested in some of those Hawaiian Birds eye chili's.  I have many friends of Vietnamese ethnicity who love birds eye type chili's.  They are always asking me to find a chili of this type with habanero or higher type heat.

cool

See if they can get you seeds for the Cayenne-type Annuums the Koreans grow for their hot pepper powder called Gochugaru. I've been growing them here for 4 years now, and they're a very prolific pepper that's un-fussy and easy to grow. The pods are aromatic like a paprika but pack the punch of a Cayenne. Kind of thick skinned for fresh use, but excellent for powder.

i just came back from Oahu, mostly in the Honolulu area and i searched up and down for peppers, in grocery stores all i could find were orange habs, fresno, anaheim and thai(that included their markets).

i didn't venture into a nursery as i didn't have travel means but i did walk the side streets looking at peoples yards and didn't see any kind of peppers growing..

found 1 guy, who has a friend that is growing orange habs and bhut jolokia(ghost peppers) but that was it. i asked what appeared to be locals and no one i met ever heard of local Hawaiian style peppers, now it could be that many were not originally from the island.

I'd say that is probably the case.  Depending what Island and what section of town you were in you probably had no chance of finding local hot peppers.  Sorry about your terrible luck.

Thats a real bummer!

this annuum came from one of my relatives yards on the big island, we brought a couple pods home and have been growing it ever since. its a beautiful plant, the peppers start dark purple and go to bright red, they are decently hot. makes great chili pepper water and teriyaki

Here's a pic he sent me of the ones I mentioned above... Should have my seeds any day now - they won't start till next season (but I may get the itch and try a few sprouts for the hell of it;)
