Heat warnings: Do you pay attention?

Other day, out in garden, wife calls me in.  Next thing I know, we are off to a hotel for a mini vacation.  Seems there was a heat advisory, air quality warning, and they thought the frigging red cross might be called in.  I was all: What?  But will say an air conditioned hotel with swimming pool was nice.

So am curious, do people take the heat warnings seriously?  Seems like the local municipality does.

Dude, wifey surprised you with mini getaway and you complain about it let's hope she doesn't read on here lol.

Not complaining.  Wife usually knows best.  I have been known to stay out until I am kind of shaking.  The AC was great.  The pool was great.  The food wasnt all that great but not having to turn on the stove or oven was great.  The kids didnt even fight much.

Just seemed really odd to turn on local news and be told not to go outside.

I clicked on this post thinking it was regarding the thermometers or flames (heat warnings ) on hot sauce bottles.

Glad to hear you had a little break from the blazing heat outside.

Well how hot is hot? Im from south africa and it gets scorching over here. Just the other day a town not so far from me burnt down and 10 thousand people were escorted. And we are currently facing a major crisis over here with a drought, we have 10% water left in our dams,it will run dry in less than 3months leaving 4million people without water.

Oh and heat warnings over here means beach day for everyone ,we love hot weather, over here people freeze to death when it hits below 55f. No jokes,we are too acclimated to warm weather.

Are there plans to do something about it or are your officials just sort of hoping for rain?  That is horrific.  One reservoir feeds 4 million people?

On heat, the body gets used to things.  No clue how hot it was the other day.  Way too hot for my wife and kids.  I am out there every day working the field.  So I noticed it was hotter than normal, but not by much.  I would likely fall over and die if I suddenly moved to where you live.

One main Dam and i think 4 other smaller ones. The smaller towns that surrounds them have their own dams but its only enough for themselves.

Not much the officials can do we are already on D day with level 4b restrictions. They are looking into desalination plants but costs re high and we are a third world country so money is a issue. We get very little rain and our summers are scorching.

We are really hoping this winter is bringing more rain but so far not looking good.Only 2months left of winter, scary days ahead.

I am so sorry you are facing this.  It has been my experience that people in the United States do not think things like this can happen here.  I think they are wrong and am taking steps to make sure we have enough in our ponds.  Not sure it will be enough, but thinking the US is not immune to things like water shortages.

Thing is, I don't think of South Africa as a third world country at all.  I met someone online from there.  Got to know each other.  She is always on the look out for strange peppers in the markets.  I forget how but I wound up meeting two of the security guards that work in the complex where she lives.  Nice guys.  One is addicted to some weird drink from Mexico.  There lives sound very similar to urban folk who live here in the United States.

I know your government faced some serious changes not long ago.  But from what I see you guys are kind of like the US that the urban areas are fairly modern, but some areas are utterly impoverished.  Best example, most Americans have no idea what is happening in the Appalachian region.

Prayers and well wishes that the infrastructure is improved before they run out.

Gonzo, I wanted to understand what you guys are facing.  Googled, read many articles.  According to the United Nations, World Bank, and lots of other international sources South Africa is one of many facing the same challenge.  They are predicting water wars over some of the shortfalls.  India is building dams which prevent rivers from feeding Pakistan. Those are both nuclear nations.  Our world is getting really scary.

I have to ask: Have you considered immigration?  Do you have skill sets that would help with that?  Australia has some of its own problems with water, but I thought to immigrate there many years ago.  Seems they and other nations encourage immigration if folk have certain skill sets. Different skills for different nations.  No clue what the US wants.

Nope i like it here. I don't think i will ever live in another country. It's only the main city in one of our 9 provinces that is facing this severe water issue, not much you can do if it doesn't rain. Climate change is very real, weather you believe its natural or man is also a contributing factor thats up to you but it is changing rapidly.

On moving: I know exactly how you feel.  I am not thrilled with my government right now, but the land, the people, the neighbors I all love.  Besides, the government mostly leaves us alone out here in the middle of no where.  I can do all the nutty things that I like to do and nobody bothers me.

On climate change: I think the key is adaptation.  That brings me back to my government.  They want to argue if it is man made or natural instead of trying to adapt to what is happening.
