Late last summer I crossed a Jalapeño with a Hungarian Hot Wax. Both plants were producing peppers with a moderate amount of heat. I grew out the F1 in the grow tent and just tasted the first ripe pepper - almost no heat! The heat level is like a Shishito or even milder.
Unless I mixed up the seeds, the cross is shiny and was dark green like a Jalapeño, but shaped like the Hot Wax. The pepper is two lobed and grew down instead of up like the Hot Wax.
I thought that heat was a dominant gene. Could it be mild because of the growing conditions (plenty of light, no stress)
