Hello from Japan

Hey all

My name's George, i'm originally from England but now living in Tokyo.

The lack of spicy food in Japan has caused me to keep several birdseye and Habanero plants this season, and it's very much a hobby getting out of control.

I'm looking at increasing my project in the new year, after just getting hold of some fresh seeds from the UK.
-Trinidad scorpion Butch T
-Bhut Jolokia (my favourite)
-Dorset Naga
-Scotch Bonnet
-Yellow Habanero

ontop of that i'm gonna be over wintering this years Habanero plants, which are still in the middle of a fruiting frenzy, thanks to my living room being like a greenhouse and having alot of sunlight.

Looking forward to starting Germination in the new year, i already have plans in motion for insulating and lighting for propagation. still searching for a heat mat that can be used on Japan's puny 100v electricals without having to buy a bulky transformer (last resort) for running one from the US/UK.

Cheers!

Hi George, this hobby of growing peppers is like people getting gold fever when they find gold sure is fun though.
good luck with your project that's a good start list you got.
Cheers from Wisconsin

yeah it's an obsession. luckily the girlfriend fully supports it, she loves chillies! rare to find a Japanese girl who can handle the heat - whenever i make a Chili con carne she always complains 'needs just one more pod, then it's perfect!'

Hi and welcome from western Massachusetts. Having a GF who also loves chiles is a bonus. It's one of the things that attracted me to my wife.

:welcome: and sorry you are having a hard time with baby heating. I just use florescents close to the babies and keep the lights on for 12-18 hours and the seem happy without the heating pad. Might want to try that if you can not find a mat.

:welcome: from the other side of the Pacific Rim, PacificNorthWest USA!

Thanks balac.
My plans are insulating my cupboard with aluminium sheet padding. I got given a fluorescent light for free, but japanese apartments are poorly insulated and bloody cold in winter. I dunno if the insulation and light alone will be enough. Planning to sow late january, so excited!

Can anybody give me tips, will the humidity and over 30°c be a pro or con for me in summer?
I had no problems with my habs this year and as far as I know, we don't get aphids here.

I am worried about humidity maybe causing mould problems (hence I wanna sow early and get strong stalks before humidity kicks in, apart from giving a head start for super hot chinense growing season )

Nja, it's surprising just how mild in heat curry is here. If you ask for hot curry it's usually just more curry powder rather than using chillies to get it hotter.
There are one or two half decent Indian places about, but even more bad.
My standards are too high, there's so many great curry houses in the UK.

I remember my first lamb jalfrezi at 7 years old, loaded with green chillies :)
