its not a major slang term used here and is not exactly literal in its usage, so its not a big deal if you guys use it different, no one from what i can see here in the USA would be offended, if thats your concern

Lol that's super interesting,the way we pronounce it is a bit different,like the word scare,the "e" in awe,is said "eh". So you pronounce it "ah-weh" 
if that helps. The dog crap sounds funny,I could just imagine our teens here stepping in some and says to his friend "awe man I just stepped is dog crap!" And the friend would reply "man that's so cool" LOL!
