I decided in the last few days that I really want to start growing peppers this year, but have struggled to pick what to grow and figure out how to grow it in the desert with hard clay soils. I'd love to find a small variety to grow. Any suggestions?

Most of the NuMex types are desert adapted. Maybe try the Hatch, Chimayo, or Mirasol landrace chiles? Sandia Seed has a good selection of desert adapted types, but it is pretty late in the season to start from seed. You might look at their selection and then order live plants from one of the chile specialist nurseries like Cross Country Nurseries or Chilewoman.

:welcome:  from the U.P. of Michigan! For hard clay soils, you'll definitely want at least some compost and either vermiculite or perlite for moisture retention. For varieties, I'd go with hardy C.Chinense, like Habanero, Bhut Jolokia, Scotch Bonnet, Fatali, Aribibi Gusano, etc. Good luck on your season!
 
Grow in Felt pots,  I have very bad soil in a way too so I grow most of my plants in the felt pots works great. I get Manure and make my own compost, or in the past I got 50% organic soil and 50% mushroom compost.   PS. welcome from N. Cali.
